place individual PSD layers into ILLUSTRATOR as LINKED files like Indesign
Placing individual psd layers in Illustrator is a joke compared to Indesign.
When trying to place a linked and layered psd file in Illustrator you get NO 'options' (even when 'options' is selected in the dialogue box when placing/importing.)
You have to have 'link' turned off in the dialogue box in order to see the 'options' and even then the psd layers just come in as embedded shapes WHICH AREN'T linked but embedded instead. When you then unembed/link them, NEW .psd files are then created instead of linking back to the original .psd files.
The Adobe online instructions mention that there are import options for 'Layer Comp', 'When Updating Link', 'Keep Layer Visibility Overrides', 'Use Photoshop’s Layer Visibility'when placing layerd psd files in Illustrator but these options are NOT. EVER displayed for linked files when importing into Illustrator and are always greyed-out on non-linked/embedded files when they do appear.
The Indesign placing of Individual PSD layers has far more options and is less convoluted.....and the placing of smart, linked illustrator artboards in Photoshop is also much better (even if it would be better to have the option of placing individual Illlustrator layers as smart objects instead.... like AE easily manages to do.)
It is a mess, all the Adobe software is from one company but yet all apps still have different ways (and options) to simply tranfer layers between each other.

I am using Illustrator 27.5 for Windows. The issue ist still not solved: Import options dialog won´t show up, even if the link-option in the File Open dialoque is unchecked. So there is NO option to place a PSDs with a certain layer comp selected. I agree to Matt and would like to see the same import options Illustrator as known from Indesign.
