New Document has strange green lines, rulers, checkered background, and second artboard
My Illustrator recently updated to 28.7.1
Now, when I create a new document in Illustrator, the artboard/working area looks like the attached file.
I'm confused at what this is and the checkerboard background is messing up my vision!!
How do I go back to the plain dark gray work surface with WHITE artboard view?
Also, when I am trying to create 1 artboard, it keeps creating 2 artboards...one filling the whole background and 1 the size that I specified....

Agape, it seems like you created a new document based on 'Film & Video' document profile (see the screenshot).
Modern dialog displays document profiles as categories.
This specific profile is specifically designed to have video rulers (View > Rulers > Show/Hide Video Rulers), Center Mark, Cross Hairs, Video Safe Frames (these can be disabled in Artboard Options dialog — pick Artboard tool and press Enter to open it).
The checkered background is called transparency grid (View > Show/Hide Transparency Grid, or Cmd+Shift+D), and is useful when you need to control the background instead of having it white.
The second large artboard is automatically created for compatibility with AfterEffects.Instead of toggling these all off, use a different document profile, like "Web' or 'Print'. Each one suits its own purpose.
This is the same problem discussed here at forums: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/illustrator-new-document-has-transparency-grid-green-lines-and-white-background/m-p/11593365
