Selection Tool grabbing top layer rather than selected object in Layers panel
I’m aware that there are workarounds to this issue, but being something I have always done through habit, I don't like that this has suddenly changed on me. I reset my settings to default, but cannot find anything that goes back to how I used to select objects.
Okay into the issue... I usually would select objects in the Layer panel, I use overlapping objects of the EXACT same size, ones with pattern vectors and gaps and lower layers of gradient colours, and if I want to edit this colour layer or move it around my canvas, I would normally just click the object, select in the Layers panel, but then when I go to click to slide the bottom layer out and away it automatically grabs the very top layer. I know I could lock the top layer or isolate the selected bottom layer, but I just enjoyed the simplicity of not needing to do either of those things in the past.
Please someone help me, I’ve been trying to fix this for hours with no luck.
I’ve supplied a video, where I would like to just select, edit or move the bottom object (in this video being the rainbow layer), however I can only move it with isolation mode now, which isn't what I want.

Okay, thank you for this. i don't know how but i think i've figured out my issue, im sorry if i got your hopes raised for this to be a function of AI - i would also like this feature to exist,
i've not used adobe a lot in the last year having finished my graphic design degree i had not used it very frequently until picking up a few times here and there. I updated it when opening it for the first time in a while to create some designs for my tumblers, and i was fully convinced that i use to move the layers below in this way.
i think i just got so use to using the comands CTRL + SHIFT + [ and CTRL + SHIFT + ] to bring my layers to the front to edit them and then once done sent them to the back where they belong again, and i got so use to doing this that it wasnt even in my mind until you told me its not possible in AI. Has made me laugh that i spent 3 hours pulling my hair out trying to find my old settings that didnt exist. Atleast i wont waste my time trying to fix it any longer, so thank you for that haha.
hopefuly they do bring this feature to AI because affinity is on to something there, it would be greatly appreciated as a feature.

Stephanie, this is odd...
What you describe and show is what can be called 'soft isolation lock', and this is what Affinity Designer has.. and something Ai just never had (except for the point selection of curves, where selecting a curve below would ensure the tool would prefer it instead of the one above — see the GIF attached)... it was broken recently, but fixed in 29.5.1 — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/49702187But other than this... there are existing requests here at UserVoice about having it like this:
1. A hotkey or a mode to prioritize selected objects — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32614096
2. Add an option to constrain Illustrator to only move the selected object — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/49161260So isolating an object to move was always the only option for Ai.
Take a look at two more GIFs to see the difference (notice also in Ai you have to click either the selection marker or the target marker to have an object selected on canvas). If you are dead sure it was a thing Ai could have done in past (oh, I wish) — please find any details on this, proofs, mentions...
I use isolation a lot, and I have a hotkey assigned to enter the mode, so I am sure — the only way to move an object the way you need now is to pick Direct Selection and try to move the object by the edge or point rather than fill.
