The latest Beta 29.2.38 now offers a way to see the distances between a selected object and an object hovered over / edges of an artboard.
- Click on the object you want to measure the distance from
- Press Opt/Alt and hover over the object that you want to measure distance to
- You can also hover over empty area to see the distance from the selected object and the artboard boundaries
Please try it and come back with the feedback.

As Scott Falkner says in comments, you can clip a whole layer if you select a path you want to use as a mask, then open the Layers panel and select Make Clipping Mask from the flyout menu.

The issue seems to be fixed in the latest version of Illustrator.
Please try to test it and reply back if it works as expected for you.
An error occurred while saving the comment Rob Hutchings commentedI have this issue and have had it for a number of versions upto the latest 23.0.1. I seem to recall it coming in around the time the UI was given an overhaul, although the tab ruler seemed to have gotten forgotten.
I think you'll find that the issue isn't setting it to zero, but resetting the left indent to the same point as the first indent. If you set the first line indent to 10 and then try to set the left indent to 10 it doesn't work. It doesn't matter if you set it in the x. box or try to drag (the ridiculously small) marker along the ruler.
The workaround that I have adopted for the past couple of years is to set the x. position to whatever you want + 0.001 as this seems to be more accurate than the system allows for. So for 10 use 10.001 and when you hit tab it'll miraculously change to 10. Anything higher 0.1 or 0.01 and the specific measurement will stick.

Latest Beta Build 29.2.34 now allows to export into Ai and EPS formats via Export for Screens / Assets dialog.
Please try to test it and comment on if it works as you expect.
Exporting TIFFs requires more work. If you are interested in having this format included, please upvote this separate request.

2019 and this is still an issue - please give us a checkbox to exclude content beyond any clipping mask!
If you can't fix it in your own way can't you enact it so that the checkbox 'fakes' the fix by running its own internal postprocessing to trim away any transparent pixels - very similar to Photoshop's Trim > to transparent pixels command??
