This is something that's very useful in the desktop version and, in my opinion, cannot be replaced by brush strokes with the blob brush tool.
The different stroke profiles can give a clean look while keeping the strokes editable. see atached image to see what I mean.

May 2021, I have to stop working for today, AI switches to outline mode with the same error message op described, and other stuff I did today made it crash, I don't know what's going on here but this must be the latest update I installed (version 25.2.3). Very annoying.

So this has been around for a couple of years now, recently I've finally had a version of illustrator where this was fixed (what a dream), but then with the last update, it came back (version 25.2.3). By now I feel like installing an update to illustrator is like playing russion roulette - will some issues be fixed? Will a whole bunch of new bugs appear? Or will the old ones reappear?

I have to either ungroup objects or make a compound path out of a single shape to use the eyedropper, it's annoying af tbh. Total workflow killer.

Thank you Cassie, I just tried this and unfortunatly it didn't work. I tried it again and after the third attemp AI suddenly crashed...I'm frustrated. I've made this post over a year ago, by now, I have a new computer, newest CC version, always update everything, but this bug has been there the whole time. Just like the eyedropper bug (doesn't work on groups).

I don't get why Adobe isn't fixing this stuff. I know I'm not the only one with those problems, but instead of fixing this it's just new unessessary features with each update -.-

    Hi Anish,

    1. I've tried different path types and even created new blank documents and recreated it, same problem.
    2. Both, still same problem.
    3. There's no one specific file where this occurs, it's happening with every new document I created since the last update.
I did notice however when I open older files (that I've created before the update and that feature dashed lines) it's working properly. I can even create new dashed lines normally, but only within documents that have been created with the older illustrator version. Would it help if I send you a new and an old file with dashed lines in it?

Using Illustrator CC 2020 V. 24.0.3 on MacOS Mojave 10.14

The dashed line effect cannot be applied. As soon as I make use of the gap field, I can see a preview but then when I click anywhere the effect just disappears. And when I try to create outlines it just turns into a normal non-dashed line.

Another update, another illustrator version with a useless eyedropper tool. This problem has been around for so long that I've started to get used to annoying workarounds, but really nothing can replace it. Fact is, you will have to ungroup objects or waste a lot of time with the recolor panel or color panel to work around.
    And I've had this problem for at least 4 or 5 years, with 3 or 4 dirfferent computers/ mac versions/ illustrator versions. This is the most annoying bug ever. Sorry for letting out my frustrations like this but really, can't this be fixed? I don't need any new and fancy features, just make the tools work that are already there ;___;

I have the exact same proplem. Only when I use it on a group, It does seem to apply the stroke color/ weight, but the fill color stays the same. Once I ungroup, it goes back to its original look...

    Adobe Illustrator's Multithreading Journey Begins!

    Dear Illustrator Community,

I'm thrilled to announce that we've embarked on an exciting journey to bring multithreading capabilities to Adobe Illustrator. This significant undertaking will enhance performance and responsiveness across various aspects of the application.

While this is a complex process that will take some time to fully implement, I wanted to share our progress so far.

    Our Approach

We've strategically begun by focusing on the most computationally intensive operations—those that typically take more time and block the main thread, resulting in slower response times while you work. By moving these operations to separate threads, we aim to significantly improve your overall experience with Illustrator.

It's important to note that you may see more noticeable impact in some areas than others initially. However, we want to assure you that this is just the beginning, and we will continue this journey to bring improvements across…

I also wanted to suggest this, it's a great idea! Not just for clients, but also for my own reference. I often just guess how much time I've spend working on something, I could be way off.
Would be great if the timer could detect if the application is actually in use, and pause counting for example when the browser or a different app is used and Illustrator is just running in the back.
This would be a great feature for any other App like Photoshop, too.

The latest Beta build 29.0.0.9 now allows us to create a gradient from selected swatches, using two ways:

    1. Select swatches you need (use Cmd/Ctrl to select several) and drag-n-drop them onto the gradient strip in Gradient panel.
    2. Select swatches you need and choose the new 'Gradient from Swatches Selection' command from the Swatches panel’s flyout menu.

In both cases new gradient stops will be spread uniformly, using the current order of swatches in the panel (not the order of selection).

If you have artwork selected in the document while doing this, the gradient will be automatically applied to it.

Please try the feature and comment back.

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 23.0.6 which is available worldwide now.

Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.

You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!
