eyedropper tool
I have never had to ungroup objects to get the eye dropper tool to apply selected attributes to an object. This no longer works without ungrouping objects.
I have never had to ungroup objects to change the color of an object selecting a color from swatches. This no longer works without ungrouping objects.
I have posted a thread with all the screenshots you could ever need and the this appears to be a glitch that needs fixing...really, really bad. The solution to the issue from my thread was to post the problem here.
Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels – https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.

So this has been around for a couple of years now, recently I've finally had a version of illustrator where this was fixed (what a dream), but then with the last update, it came back (version 25.2.3). By now I feel like installing an update to illustrator is like playing russion roulette - will some issues be fixed? Will a whole bunch of new bugs appear? Or will the old ones reappear?
I have to either ungroup objects or make a compound path out of a single shape to use the eyedropper, it's annoying af tbh. Total workflow killer.

also getting this!!! so **** annoying to have to ungroup to eyedrop properly. my workflow is to have groups within groups, so I have to keep un-grouping them ALL or I have to apply the swatches manually.

It's happening again in the last version 24.3

The SOLUTION might be to open the Eyedropper Tool options and untick top checkmarks in both columns. Otherwise your picked style goes under the 'Contents' (check the Appearance stack if you are experiencing this), and is obstructed by it.
'Unticked Appearance mode' is a default one and it seems that Ai sometimes changes these options without a user knowing. I already saw several reports about this.
Please comment if this solves it for you. -

August 23, 2019. This is still an issue for me too, though I'm glad to find I'm not the only one with the issue. I'd LOVE to get this fixed!

July 23, 2019. Still a problem. Eyedropper won't change color of grouped objects. Also won't sample colors from placed images. When I try is sets the fill and stroke to "none"

I am having the same issue. See attached screenshot. The objects are clearly white, yet the appearance panel insists they are brown.

I'm having the same issue. It's very frustrating. I usually just ungroup the objects and then sample the color I want with the eyedropper. Then regroup. Its annoying that just trying to sample a color that USED to work in one step now takes three.

Hi can I get a follow up on this problem? I have been struggling with the eyedropper bug for months.
Thanks!

The eyedropper in illustrator drives me nuts... Why can't we just eye drop specific colors in a pixel or gradient-like photoshop?

This is also happening with text for me too ( as well as grouped objects ) - whereas i used to be able to simply select all text & use eye dropper to pick up a colour - I now need to highlight each line of text with the text tool & change colour individually - its made a huge impact to my work flow !! Is there an easier way of doing this that I have missed ?
