XD and PS defaults to open .ai files - AI files should open with Illustrator only
Working in windows 10. After updating XD and Illustrator to 2019, all my existing .ai files have been defaulted to open in XD. I can use the "Open With" option to successfully open .ai files in Illustrator but the default always stays with XD no matter how many times I select Illustrator.
Uninstalled XD. AI files cannot locate Illustrator as primary software for launch.

Hi Guys Ever since the last major update, my Illustrator files will not stay associated to Illustrator. They started out as a Dimensions association then I tried to change it to AI but it would not change from XD and it will not change no matter what I do. It has to be because of the last major Adobe update. Any tips?

As of today my Ai files are trying to open in PS when I click them. The only way they open them is if I go to ai and open them. Please fix

Same Problem here. Windows "choose file" solution doesn't work. Uninstall illustrator 2019 to install 2018 is NOT a solution, is just a downgrade. Adobe, please fix this!

I made the new update CC2019, since then I can't open my Ai files like always with double clicking on them. The "default action" open all my Ai files with Photoshop CC2019…
Where can I change the settings or "default action" for a normal opening of the Ai files on his original program: Adobe Illustrator? -

Windows 10 Home 1803. Cannot get Windows 10 to associate the correct file type either through System>Apps>Default Apps or right click the file and "Open With... Choose Another File Type"
Nothing works here...please assist.

After the recent Adobe updates Adobe XD has taken over my Illustrator files and I can't seem to change the '.ai' file association back to Illustrator.
I can still say it has to open with Illustrator but have to do it every time I open an '.ai' file.

I have the same problem after recent update to 2019 v.23. Can only open .ai from the AI app. Cannot use 'edit original' from ID. Win 10 v1803. Cannot force file type association. Very annoying.

When I updated my adobe Illustrator and the whole rest of the adobe suite it changed my adobe illustrator files only. It converter all the ones I had on my laptop entirely to XD save files. I dont mean the ones showing up only on the desktop screen I mean all of them in every save location. Going through and making sure I've saved my files as adobe illustrator files still spits them out as an XD save file. I've never seen this issue nor had this issue before. In the mean time I'm opening the files I need to work for illustrator but there are all stuck being an XD file.

I updated to Illustrator CC 2019 and I lost the functionality to open a file from 'File Explore' or any external folder on a PC. I can however still open a file using "file open" within illustrator.

Before the latest update, I was able to double click on an .ai file and it open in Illustrator. Now it opens in Acrobat or Photoshop. This is a bit silly and frustrating.

Additional Info...
Other user accounts on the same machine are not affected, only this user account, under which the Adobe XD was installed! -

I can confirm this issue! After installing Adobe XD all *.ai files are associated to XD and it's not possible to change back to Adobe Illustrator!

For Windows 10, Adobe Illustrator 2019 is not opening .ai files by default. This means Adobe Illustrator 2019 is not showing as an eligible program to open .ai by default. You cannot set this in the Windows Settings Default Apps by File Type list. This bug is related to Illustrator 2019 and not to Adobe XD or Illustrator 2018 (tested by uninstalling/installing each application appropriately to test).
Steps of testing:
- Attempted to assign default application to Illustrator 2019 through the "Open with..."
- Attempted to assign default application to Illustrator 2019 through the Windows Settings > Default Apps by File Type list.
- Uninstalled Adobe XD (no effect, .AI file types could not be assigned to Illustrator 2019)
- Installed Adobe Illustrator 22.1 (2018), successfully able to default .ai files to this version of Illustrator. If both versions are installed, it looks like the files default to 2019, but the 2018 version of Illustrator will open by default.Windows version: 1803 build 17134.345

After installing adobe XD, all my ai files were automatically change to open with XD. Changing the file association through windows settings doesnt work, it refuses to recognise illustrator for ai files.
I am running windows 10 pro. Installed illustrator first, and then XD. Seems to have happened post latest update.
