  1. Using Random Size Calligraphic Brush inside of a group/layer with an effect applied makes Ai pick only one size for each brush tip

If a layer or a group has an level effect applied (in this case it’s Transform, for creating symmetric designs), then Ai doesn’t apply random size for the calligraphy brush tips created with Brush tool inside this group/layer — but does it outside of this group / on a normal layer.

Take a look at the test file attached and the GIF recorded.
Clicking with Brush tool randomizes the size for the first object created in Layer 1 (with the effect applied), but each consequential click makes points with same thickness.
But when the same happens on Layer 2, with…

  2. Brushes become a lighter tint of black in an RGB document when expanded or rasterized.

Brushes like Art Brushes are based on a CMYK document. They were created with C0 M0 Y0 K100.
When these brushes are used in an RGB document with an RGB black (0/0/0) for the stroke, the result will be around a lighter 10% black than expected because the CMYK black will be converted to RGB.
You can check that by expanding, rasterizing or Output Preview in Acrobat.
If they had been created in the CMYK document with a 100% Grey instead of CMYK values, they would have converted to the darkest black in an RGB documents (greyscale always keep their…

  3. Custom art brush results in way too many anchor points when expanded

As reported here by Peachtears13: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdobeIllustrator/comments/1kei4zn/custom_art_brush_results_in_way_too_many_anchor/

Having a simple path (with minimum amount of points), applying a simple art brush (with minimum amount of points), and then expanding it gives a ton of extra points, hardly needed to define resulting shapes.

It worked MUCH better in CS4... and then became much worse in CS6 (or perhaps in CS5) — take a look at the images attached.

Yes, there are tools to deal with the mess afterwards: native Simplify, plugin VectorFirstAid... but it should not be like this in the first place.

And please, do not 'solve' it by throwing in…

  4. Blob Brush strokes often include garbage on turns

What is wrong with Blob Brush. Even with simplest strokes I often get groups, and these have the main part and tiny pieces of garbage next to it in them.
Sometimes these are thinnest slivers, sometimes knotted madness, sometimes chunks chomped off...
If I run simple Pathfinder Add, some of this get 'healed'. Why don’t you do at least this? Why these awfully angular turns and garbled edges happen in the first place? Please study the file.

  5. Let users select their own brush strokes rather than enforcing inappropriate and slow ones on them

What if Illustrator didn't default to inappropriate brush strokes every time I attempted to use their brush? Often, I find myself working on designs that need clean vector outlines rather than a ragged brush stroke effect. Having to switch back from the ragged brush stroke every time is time-consuming and slows the software. What if we gave users the freedom to select the brush of their choice?

  6. Calligraphic brush renders improperly if Roundness is less than 10%

Calligraphic flat brush renders improperly (brush tip is S-shaped) when roundness is less than 10%. Was trying to do calligraphy with 5% flat tip in Illustrator when I noticed this problem, that creates a lot of cleanup. See images.

  7. Blob brush not reverting from Brush using keyboard shortcut

When switching between custom keyboard shortcuts from the Brush to the Blob Brush, the shape stays the same and doesn't respond to tablet pen pressure sensitivity.

  8. Older Brush Strokes get replaced with new ones drawn nearby

Why a new brush stroke always replaces the old one, if they're close to each other?

  9. Brush palette inconsistent with Direct Selection Tool

I select a path drawn with the brush tool using Direct Select then click another brush. Sometimes the brush is applied to the path, sometimes it isn't, although the brush is shown to have changed as expected in the brush palette.

If the brush is not applied as described, when I deselect the path and select it again it reverts to showing the original brush.

I'm sure this has happened since the latest update (28.1, 64 bit, Win 10). I work with brush tool a lot and this is introducing a lot of irritation and wasted time to my projects.

  10. Brush Pressure not working (greyed out) in 27.8.1 - Reverting to version 27.7 fixes issue

When Illustrator auto updated to 27.8.1, all my pressure brushes stopped working. Pressure is not available as a brush option.

I use an XP-Pen artist Pro 15.6 tablet on Windows 10

I went through the SOP that I do when this happens - uninstalled and reinstalled multiple versions of the XP-Pen drivers and nothing worked. I think reverted Illustrator back to 27.7 and it works again.

It would be nice if this functionality didn't break regularly when new versions are released. It makes Auto-updating an unrealistic option as I end up wasting time chasing down bugs when I really should…

  11. Changing the Transparency removes brush

When I have several lines applied with a Pattern Brush and change the transparency of those lines to 50%, everything is fine. As soon as I return to 100% opacity, the Pattern Brush is completely removed and I have to reapply it.

  13. Stroke weight defaults to 1pt when a new type of brush is applied.

    MacOS 12.6.2
    Illustrator 27.1.1

    To replicate the issue:
Assign a 2pt stroke to an object, then apply any brush to it — the stroke weight becomes 1pt.
Switching between brushes of the same type (Calligraphic, Scatter, Art…) seems to keep the weight intact, but switching the type of brush triggers the stroke weight to default back to 1pt.
Expected result: the assigned weight stays the same regardless of the brushes applied.

  14. "NEW ART HAS BASIC APPEARANCE" APPEARANCE panel options NOT working for BRUSH

On the desktop version of Illustrator.....

When you use the pencil tool with 'NEW ART HAS BASIC APPEARANCE" set in the APPEARANCE panel options, any subsequent/new pencil art has a basic appearance as it is supposed to.

When you use the pencil tool with 'NEW ART HAS BASIC APPEARANCE" NOT set in the APPEARANCE panel options, any subsequent/new pencil art has the same appearance as the last made pencil stroke as it is supposed to.

THESE TWO 'NEW ART HAS BASIC APPEARANCE" SETTINGS in the APPEARANCE panel options unfortunately DO NOT WORK this way when using the Brush tool.

    The…

  15. Too many brushes saved in Print.ai (Print.ai = 300 MB) disable Trim View, despite 32 GB RAM

Trim View still worked in a new doc based on my Print.ai, until I opened the brushes tab, then it got disabled.

  16. Pattern Brush 'Hue Shift' does not result in correct appearance of stroke color

This issue is not new and occurs for a few years at least.
I i apply at a pattern brush > Colorization > Method: Hue Shift, the key color does not represent the same color of the choosen stroke color when the brush is applied to a Stroke. The color is always way off. I am well experienced in Illustrator (and certifeid by Adobe) but i can not find any thing i did wrong. That's why i am almost sure this issue is a bug. But please, tell me i am doing something wrong. That way i can help my…

The solution provided in the comments below.

However, when the key color is automatically gets set as the white (or any grayscale tint) as the most prominent color, the hue shift gets calculated wrong.

If you think Illustrator should pick another color in cases like this — please continue voting.

  17. Blending paths with brushes and width profiles works wrong.

    Create two lines.
Apply art or pattern brushes to both of them.
Apply width profiles to both of them.
    Blend them.
Ai will generate steps that have uniform profiles instead of intermediate.

Scatter, calligraphic, and bristle brushes won't let you edit the width profile. I did however test with two calligraphic brush paths with different pressure curves and that was ignored for the intermediary paths. Please test this with bristle and scatter brushes as well.

(this is essentially a reopening of https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41634754-blending-paths-with-width-profiles-works-wrong with a feature that was missed when originally implementing it, as such I just copied and edited Egor's…

  18. pen tablet skipping brush strokes works fine in photoshop but not illustrator

I have Illustrator 2022 and Illustrator 2020 and it skips strokes some times with both versions. It shows a circle that represents the brush where I start the stroke and it also shows the brush symbol that is moving with the pen tip. The circle that represents the brush stays where I start the stroke until I finish the stroke and lift the pen, then the circle that represents the brush goes away, while the brush symbol is moving with my stroke but no stroke is being drawn. The brush strokes in Photoshop are fine, they do not skip strokes…

  20. Holding alt to make the Width tool only change one side of a brushed path snaps the other side to zero.

    1. Draw a path. Give it a simple, thick stroke.
    2. Hold down ALT while using the Width tool to change one side's width; note that the other side stays the same width.
    3. Draw a new path. Give it an art brush or pattern brush.
    4. Hold down ALT while using the Width tool to change one side's width; note that the other side suddenly snaps to zero-width.

I would swear the Width tool used to behave as in step 2 on brushed paths? It'd be nice to get this reversion fixed. Or to make the Width tool behave consistently across different kind…
