Illustrator allows this today with Shape Builder tool.
You need to hold Opt/Alt and either click or brush through the excessive portion of the path, and Ai will trim it to the next intersection or between intersections. Works with selected objects only.
The precision of the tool is limited and bound to internal grid of the document. There is a bug report about this you might want to upvote.

An error occurred while saving the comment Meanwhile, there are several great plugins to deal with these:
1. VectorFirstAid by AstuteGraphics
2. Concatenate/Assimilate by Rick Johnson’s Graffix -

An error occurred while saving the comment As Lance says (thank you so much for taking your time to write this extended comment).
I agree that double-clicking 'Characters' to access them is not obvious, same as with 'Contents'. It definitely should be more clear. Voted!

This filed is now visible in Color panel for all the color modes, starting version 27.6.1.
There is no way to disable it though, so if you want to be able to turn it off — upvote the request: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47027617

Which object, what FX?
Does it happen all the time with any file and FX specific only? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Nope, there is no such a tool in Ai.
However, there is a Fisheye effect, that allows to apply a distortion to a whole object as a tweakable deformation, rather than e direct and final distortion that Freehand used to apply — Effect > Warp > Fisheye.
Also, there are custom plugins for Ai that add a very similar tool you want, like FILTERiT: https://www.cvalley.com/products/filterit5-2/

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 24.3.0 which is available worldwide now.
Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!

25.4.1 is available in Creative Cloud but the What's New section of the user guide only covers 25.3.

An error occurred while saving the comment Sounds bad :/
Sure nobody wants to release a brick, but sometimes very unlucky releases happen...Updates must be applied without you knowing, if you have the Auto-update option unchecked.
In your Creative Cloud app, please check File > Preferences > Apps, Auto-update. Is it off for you?I remember there was an issue with it, when it turned on by itself, so I now recheck it once in a month.
Also, can you share the file that crashes newer Ai, to sharewithai@adobe.com, for the team to check?
This feature is available in non-free great plugin Dynamic Sketch. Must have!
