Illustrator 88's pen tool worked better than this one
Please, please... does anyone at Adobe actually draw with the current pen tool? This is the main tool in your toolbox and it hasn't had a good flow since Illustrator 10. You should be able to draw and use modifier keys to change to the +, - and ^ with ease. Instead, the cursor flashes and gives you one teensy moment when any of those are available resulting in additional points being placed when you might, for instance, be trying to remove a point. The direction handles get in the way of reaching points. Segments are selected too easily when…

Option to Have Golden Ratio & Rule of Thirds Grid (like PS)
For a canvas, if there is an option to get a Grid for 'Rule of Thirds' or Golden Ration.
This will make a lot easier for the designer and will be more effective in Illustrator as compared to PS (where this option is available) where vector designs are being created.

Easier way to unlock layers
I, like most people, work with layers. Sometimes those layers are 5, sometimes closer to 100. Thing is, I don't want to have to scroll through 100 layers to find the 1 locked layer I want to unlock. It would be great if I could just right-click on it, then go through a 2-step process to unlock the layer. At the very least, if I double-click on said locked layer, I wish to be shown immediately in the Layers panel where that layer is.

Allow users to set direction for X and Y axes
Several versions ago Adobe decided to flip Y-axis, so origin now is placed TOP-left instead of BOTTOM-left, as it was before.
They say it was done for compatibility with Photoshop and InDesign, which both have y-axis going down.I think that breaking people's workflow, deciding only ONE direction is right, was wrong.
InDesign is a publishing software, it works with a flow. I don't know anybody who reads from bottom to up (RTL — yes). When you move an object there, you don't move it up, you move it backwards
Photoshop is raster graphics editor, it works with a readable…

All letters turning to CAPS when "all caps" is selected - ð/Ð always stays lowercase (Icelandic)
All letters turning to CAPS when "all caps" is selected would be nice. The ð/Ð always stays lowercase (ð), it has to be changed manually to the uppercase 'Ð' ...which is extremely annoying.

Introduce a key that allows to choose alternate glyphs from popup with keyboard
When working with text, every time I want to choose one of proposed alternate glyphs I have to move my hand to mouse and click the desired symbol.
This is tiring. I work with text. Why can’t I press a key to move the focus to this popup, use arrows to navigate to a desired one, and press Enter to confirm my choice? Why use mouse while I type?
Or is it a way already and I just can't find it?Please, make a way to access these without mouse.

Set class info for SVG
You can set the name of a path that becomes an id in the svg export.
If you are programming in javascript to animate items in the svg, you need the id, but also classes. This would mean we could manipulate many different objects in one command.
What we need is to set a list of classes (in the Properties window, probably). So if you set the list to orangeStyle, dark, tobeResized (probably with a + sign to add another class) and the svg output will have class="orangeStyle, dark, tobeResized" inside.10 votes -
Save Illustrator and PDF at the same time
I usually save my original Illustrator file and save a PDF for proofing purposes; but usually I make updates to the illustrator file; so I have to save it again as PDF; I think it would be cool to add a check box to the save window asking you if you would like to update your PDF reflecting the updated changes on the Illustrator file.

When exporting an image, using artboard, with a single artboard, don't change filename.
If save an image using "Export As" , and I select the "use artboards" (because I want the image to be of that size, and I only want to export one specific artboard of my file, It would be better if it didn't add to the file name (ie: the filename-01.png would be filename.png). This is because I find myself exporting each layer of the same artboard with a specific name (ex: characterarm.png, characterleg.png, etc) and I have to remove the "01"s manually.
I understand that this feature is really useful when exporting all the artboards at the…60 votesThe latest version of Illustrator now allows you to manually control the behavior with the 'Suffix' option in the Export As dialog. Please check if it it works for you and comment back if it does not.

Make it possible to select locked objects?
I wish it was possible to prevent an object from moving, but still have the ability to select it. A preference setting to "allow selection of locked objects" or "lock position only" or something?
5 votesThere is a way to select locked objects in recent Illustrator versions.
In Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display section toggle ‘Select and Unlock objects on canvas’ option to see small lock icons you can click when locked objects get into a selection marquee. -
Make Asset Export settings Per-Project not Global
It doesn't make sense to have global settings for Asset Export, as the exporting requirements vary between projects. Each project should have its own Asset Export settings so this doesn't have to be set up every time when exporting from different projects with different settings.
Changing back and forward is time consuming and error prone.

Can't add EPS files to Creative Cloud libraries
Illustrator CC v. 22.1
Mac OS High Sierra v. 10.13.4When attempting to add an EPS file to a Creative Cloud library (click and drag from Mac finder to open library panel in Illustrator), the library panel indicates that I am "adding multiple files" and when I release the mouse button I get the error message that "bulk uploads are not supported in this file format" (see screenshot attached).
Currently, it seems the only workaround we have is to place the vector artwork inside an InDesign document, and then drag and drop into the library from there. However, my organization…

RETURN TO PREVIOUS VERSION EXPAND STROKE
PLEASE!!!! Return to the previous version of expand stroke. Where it KEEPS the stroke over lapping and doesn't turn it into a compound shape. SO frustrating that that is no longer available or an option. I might expand the stroke, but still want to make adjustments after(like make wider/narrower in parts), which was SO EASY previously. Now I just want to smash the computer. Eh. There are a lot of other changes I hate. But probably this is the biggest. Don't know why you would change things that have been pretty much the same for 20+ years.

Artboard background color needs to be user-assignable
We need to be able to change artboard background color.
Working on pure white is straining on the eyes and it's rarely appropriate for non-print projects (99% of my work). Having to draw colored rectangles, lock them or put them on separate layers, and then manage them when we resize or duplicate artboards is painful and tedious.
Let's have an icon for it next to the artboard name (in the Artboard palette) where we can choose a swatch (including transparent).
Let's support changing multiple artboard colors at once with multi-selection.
Thank you!
93 votesAt the moment Ai does not support Color Swatches to assign artboard background color, and currently exporting a PNG doesn’t support respecting the color, as well as into some other file formats — but the team intends to add these.
Please share more feedback, describe your workflows and needs. It helps to shape the feature.

Default iptc contact data
It would be nice if a user could enter his iptc contact data and if this data is automatically added to new files.

Tapered basic brush
The current basic brush does not allow the user to use it. if you want a basic line with flat ends you would need ot create it as a new brush or use other tools. But a basic line for the brush tool with tapered edges. Or at atleast the same exact basic brush. just with the option to change the porametors.

Inline Graphics / Anchor Object to text ability (like InDesign)
Please allow in-line graphics in text paragraphs, so graphics will move along with the rest of the copy within text. I am working on a lot of signage/wayfinding and the rooms keep getting moved about. Arro symbols and toilet icons have to be positioned manually and it is VERY time consuming. I wish the original artwork had been created in InDesign! Thanks
60 votesPlease share some real cases for this feature you had in your practice, which could have benefit greatly from having inline graphics. It will help the team to plan it and make it more useful for Ai users, than analogues we have in InDesign and Figma.

Make option to generate compound paths instead of groups when text is outlined
Create simple black-on-white string of text.
Outline it.
AI will make a group of compound paths.I would like to have a non-default option that would make AI generate one big compound path instead of group of paths.
If text has more then one character color within it — only then this option would produce a group, with a colored compounds within.Right now I have to use an Action (ungroup, release compound path, make compound path) and manually run it for every string/area of text before proceeding to next step of my workflow.
I will make a script to…24 votes
