Illustrator crashes when opening a file using 'double click' that has missing fonts.
Version: Adobe Illustrator 2018 CC v 22.0.1 (64 bit)
Step 1: I open a blank Illustrator for the first time and it opens fine.
Step 2: I double click a PDF from the back of an email attachment/the desktop etc and the file then tries to open in Illustrator.
Step 3: The file opens but at the same time a blank 'missing font' dialogue box appears and Illustrator crashes. (The missing font is 'Helvetica-bold')
Step 4: I have to close Illustrator using the task manager.
This only happens when the FIRST file I open is opened by double clicking it. If I open the same file through FILE > OPEN first, and then close it and open it again by double clicking, it opens just fine and the 'missing font' dialogue box opens correctly and I can close it.
It appears to be a problem with the 'missing font' dialogue box when the first file you open is opening by double clicking it.
Incidentally, if you double click on the file without Illustrator open, so that the act of opening the file is also opening Illustrator, then the file opens just fine!
I appreciate it's a pretty unique set of circumstances and there are plenty of ways to work around it but it still shouldn't be happening.

I've just encountered the same issue. Adobe Illustrator 23.0.2 for Windows. Freezes when double-clicking an Illustrator file with missing links and fonts in Windows Explorer, but opens successfully when using File > Open from within the program.

This problem still exists in the latest version updated 11/11/18.
Any news on a fix? Windows user, full CC suite.

Hi! My issue with Illustrator it's a bit different to the original description. I posted the crashing-issue on the Adobe forum in the Mac category and in the end they sent me here to post my comment.
I'm working with a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017 with Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 and Adobe Illustrator 22.1.
The issue is that Illustrator crashes when I close a file that I'd opened by doubleclick while Illustrator was not running. This issue didn't occur in Illustrator 22.0.1.The only way to safely run Illustrator is starting it directly instead of doubleclicking an existing Illustrator file while the program is not running.

This is still an issue, exactly the same as Christopher describes. Uninstalled and reinstalled CC and Illustrator. Checked the About Illustrator window and it is indeed on 22.1.
We have to force quit the program whenever this happens, and then it's fine the next time it opens.
