Selection tool acting like Direct selection tool and vice versa
Selection tool does not select all points and will not move a group of objects correctly, (it acts like the Direct Selection tool, not selecting all points). And the Direct Selection tool selects ALL points of a group and moves them, which is what the Selection tool is supposed to do. They are working exactly opposite as they should. "Show Bounding box" does not resolve this issue. The Selection tool has also instantly changed format of text simply upon selection (indent & tracking). Using MacOS Sierra 10.12.6, Illustrator CC 2019. This is a bad bug, please help.
Please accept my sincere apology for the inconvenience. Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels – https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.

The selection tool is not responding yet all other features are working. Turned off iPad then restart and same problem. Like the app. Please fix bug. Thanks

I know this is a little late but I came here looking for the same solution and found it on my own. You may have hit command shift B which hides/shows the bounding box. To turn it back on either hit command shift B again or go to View > Show bounding box

Sometimes, when I want to use the Selection Tool, it activates the Direct Selection Tool. And when I click on the Direct Selection Tool, it activates the Selection Tool. After a few minutes it goes back to normal. This bug is on iMac macOS Big Sur.

It's entirely effected by the order of the selection tools in the Tool Bar! I am so relieved to have found this out after two years of pain. That is why when you change layouts it might go away. But it is to do with the tools order. Customize it, build a new one with (V) above (A) and you are fine.

I re-installed the newest version of Illustrator. That seems to have done
the trick. The direct selection tool now does exactly what I expected. If that is not the case for you, I have used another solution, not as good.
I just re-installed the previous version, and worked with it. -

I am also having this issue and resorting to use the Illustrator CC 2019 version.
The selection tool acts as if it is a direct selection tool -

I am also receiving this issue, and you explained this perfectly, better than I.
