Opacity mask editing mode is broken, changes made are not visible unless Clip / Invert option is selected
I am experiencing a very new issue with Illustrator: when I draw something upon an opacity mask, the effect is not shown in real time.
Never happened something similar before.
I'm trying different settings with CPU preview, and also the relevant flag in the preferences (Draw and modify in real time, under "Performance" tab, hte last line) but does not seem to affect.
This has been happening since the latest update.
Hi Everyone,
We have fixed this bug in our latest release – v 28.2.0 which is available worldwide now. Thanks for your patience on this.

Opacity masks are not applied as soon as they should be. You have to toggle a checkbox on and off again before it is applied.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a shape to be masked
2. Select the shape and click "Make Mask" in the Transparency panel.
3. Click on the opacity mask thumbnail.
4. Optional: Click the "Clip" checkbox so you can see what you're doing.
5. Paste in or draw a masking shape that overlaps the original shape.Expected results: The mask should be applied instantly.
Actual results: The mask is not applied. You have to toggle a checkbox on and off, such as the "Clip" checkbox or the "Invert Mask" checkbox, before the mask is finally applied. Here is a video of the bug: https://youtu.be/6wis7hVdLow
I am using macOS 10.14.6.

Relinking an Image placed under an opacity mask in Transparency Window
does not change the image automatically, The document has to be saved
and reopened to show the image. Also the image just shows after ticking "Clip" in the Transparency Window.
Please see screenshot for more.

The opacity mask is not working properly. The adjustments are only visible after you switch 'clip' or 'invert' on or off.

When I create a gradient mask, and then edit the gradient, the gradient doesn't change on the artwork. I have to either make the change and then hide and then show the layer to see the changes, or if I click invert mask and then click it again back to the mask I want the changes appear. The gradient used to show live changes.

As of version 25.1, opacity masking doesn't update in real time even with the associated setting selected. It's very easy to replicate (mask any object with one). It worked as of 25.0.1, and now does not. I was really looking forward to the features introduced in 25.1, but opacity masking is central to the work I do, so back to 25.0.1, I go. I really hope this gets addressed soon!

Yes I just ran into the same problem. Have never seen this before. Effects will not update so it is limiting what I can do, including moving the object or adjusting a gradient within the opacity mask. Appreciate your efforts to fix as this is an important tool!
