Artboard background color needs to be user-assignable We need to be able to change artboard background color.
Working on pure white is straining on the eyes and it's rarely appropriate for non-print projects (99% of my work). Having to draw colored rectangles, lock them or put them on separate layers, and then manage them when we resize or duplicate artboards is painful and tedious.
Let's have an icon for it next to the artboard name (in the Artboard palette) where we can choose a swatch (including transparent).
Let's support changing multiple artboard colors at once with multi-selection.
Thank you!

Page numbers Please implement the ability to convert characters into current page numbers, identical to the InDesign feature. This would save extensive time and effort when creating documents in Illustrator, instead of manually doing this.

Custom layer colors, layer 5 yellow is killing me Can i please change the default layer colors so that layer 5 is not always yellow? I set up files all day long and yellow on white is ******* the eyes, would love to be able to set a default layer color for the first 5 or six new layers. Thank you.
66 votesHi Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. The color yellow has been removed altogether as a layer color, and has been replaced by Magenta color for Layer 5. This functionality is available in our latest release build – 24.1.1 for Win and 24.1 for Mac which is available worldwide now.

Implement quick filter in Layers panel On large documents designers very often give names to objects in document structure for improve navigation in structure. But now there are no way to quickly find object by name in document, except custom scripts.
For solve this problem please implement quick filter input field in Layers panel interface, for quickly search objects by part of his name (like filter in Fonts list).
Even if designer don't add names, via this filter we will can quick find all curves, all rectangles, all circles, all curves, all guides, etc, so it will be very useful.

Rotate in Portrait Mode on Surface Pro When rotating the Surface Pro from landscape to portrait, Illustrator will not stay in portrait mode. It reverts back to landscape.
Adobe Photoshop works in portrait mode.
Illustrator used to work in portrait mode, but no longer does in CC 2017 and CC 2018.Example of issue here:

Rotation center point remains with objects and groups, and is used when rotating an object using the bounding box controls. I want to be able to permanently edit (and reset) an object's (or group's) rotation axis (centre point). I want the new rotation axis to apply for subsequent rotation transformations, for example when using the bounding box controls.
Currently, the rotation tool (r) allows you to pick up and move an object's centre, and then rotate the object around that point. Great, except that point disappears as soon as you exit the rotation tool, which isn't very helpful.
I'm told Corel Draw had something like this... I can't overstate how much power and efficiency it would add to my workflow.…

Make Knife tool work with smart guides Knife is a very freehand tool, but you can make straight cuts, if you hold Alt. Cool. But you can't position these cuts precisely! Nor with a smart guides (at least!) or Snap to grid.
Please improve it!63 votes -
100% size is actually actual size Allow Illustrator to be monitor-aware. Have a feature where there is an onscreen ruler, and ask the user to hold up a real ruler to the screen. Let them drag a slider until the onscreen ruler perfectly matches the physical ruler. Then let this % value become the new "100% size" for that machine. Currently to see my artwork at 100% size, I need to set my view to 192%. I wish there was a setting to set my "100%" to default to 192%.

In CC 2019 (latest update 23.0.1), at 100% Zoom 1inch artwork would display at 1inch in physical (Print) size, on any display. If this doesn’t work right for screen design workflows, please use the checkbox Preferences > General > Display Print Size at 100% Zoom, to turn off the feature. Currently this feature works only on primary display, and there are plans of extending this to other attached displays.

Typesetting formulas, mathematical equations and symbols in LaTeX-style When typesetting mathematical formulas, LaTeX is the way to go and is the standard in many scientific areas. But a problem arises when mathematical symbols should be used in figures. If these figures are e.g. created in Illustrator, it is always a bit inconvenient to include the symbols in the figure. It is e.g. necessary to render the symbols separately and include them as EPS files in Illustrator or the symbols are added later to the figure by another program.
It would be really cool to have a build-in feature in Illustrator which would allow direct typesetting in the common…

Select inside marquee window Create a toggle-able feature like the one found in many CAD programs:
Select ONLY the objects ENTIRELY inside the selection window marquee via the following methods:
1. hold Shift+drag
2. Dragging left-to-right enables "select inside", dragging right-to-left enables "select touching" (as per most CAD programs)63 votes -

Artboard-specific Layers When working with multiple artboards, it would be very helpful to have artboard-specific layers displayed on the Layers panel as opposed to one long blob of all layers from all artboards.

Add isometric drawing tools Von Glitchka has an isometric drawing tools course on Lynda.com. I love producing drawings, but by adding one or two tools illustrator you could save alot of time and effort.

Relative paths for linked assets An option to use relative paths for linked assets. Because links use absolute paths, simply moving the folder your artwork is in will break the links unless the links are in the same folder. For example:
c:\artwork\project-1234\layout.ai
c:\artwork\project-1234\assets\logo.jpg
c:\artwork\standard-title-block.aiIf logo.jpg and standard-title-block.ai are both linked to inside of layout.ai, renaming the project folder will break the links. Moving the project folder will break the links.
Instead of storing the link paths absolutely, store them relatively. This way at least renaming the folder will preserve both links and moving the folder will only break links that point to file outside…

Paste and match style within illustrator When copying from one text box with style A, then pasting into a text box with style B -- provide the ability to paste as style B in a single keystroke or step. Currently the default is to keep style A when pasting which requires an additional step to convert the style B.
60 votesThis is now possible with Edit > Paste without Formatting command, as per this completed request: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/31954825-paste-with-formatting-cmd-shift-v
Use Ctrl + Alt + V on Windows or Option + Command + V on Mac.
Please comment back if it does not work for you and share details.

Convert outline text to editable text I work with a lot of files that come to me with outline text, which I then have to retype from scratch. It would be a really useful feature if outline text could be converted to editable text - could there be some kind of auto-recognition (OCR) of the outline text and generate editable text from this? Built-in OCR?

Free Distort Bounding box doesn't follow shape I know this isn't a bug, but it definitely feels that way. The Bounding box when using the free distort reset back to the initial shape and doesn't follow the shape you are shaping, Which makes it virtually impossible to make fine tuned distortions. The way it works in Photoshop is the way it should be.
I see people have complained about this for YEARS!
I cannot see a single use case where the current way is preferable. And using the effect Free Dstort isnt anybetter, since you don't get a visual representation on the artboard of what you are…

Artboards do not snap to whole pixels When the snap to pixel option is turned on and I use the Artboard Tool dragging the corner of the artboard results in random decimals.
Say if my artboard is 512x512 and I drag a corner out it will now be dragging at every pixel but with a random decimal rather than a integer. this decimal will be the same at every snapped pixel until I let go. at this point if I move it again a new random decimal will be added. These two screenshots show issue values. take not it is random and the X and Y values…

Library Organization I can't figure out a way to organize our cloud libraries. We are trying to make one library per client and having everything in chronological order can make it really hard to find icons and other elements that could be grouped by category. If we could drag them around to rearrange that would be great, if we could create little groups or folders of them like swatches that would be even better.
Thank You!
