Performance issues in pixel preview on 5K retina screen
When working in pixel preview mode on the retina screen of my iMac, the scrolling and zooming in Illustrator are very laggy. Please do the needful ASAP or we plan to move to "Affinity" because illustrator is unusable for me and its impact our workflow.
Hi All,
Thanks for reporting this issue and sorry for getting back so late. We are able to reproduce this issue at our end and it is currently under review.
Thanks

Can you confirm if this issue can be resolved? It's been years without a resolution and I'm curious how specific this issue is for high-res displays or the combination of specific hardware and higher screen resolutions.

I have a 3060Ti, 16 GB of ram, and Illustrator can't run on my PC without crashing every few minutes i use it. On my laptop however, it works perfectly. Why this this?

Its just a shame that Illustrator works very smooth on my 10 year old pc, but not on a 5K iMac. I suppose the GPU must be really underpowered. Saying that, the same functionality works flawless in Affinity Designer.

Can we finally address this issue or if it can be fixed with an update? It has been ongoing since at least 2018. If this can be reproduced, what is the exact root cause? If the root cause can be determined we can at least make a better informed decision on using alternative hardware vs. alternative software.

Same Issue for me. I'm working with "small" file 25,4 MB with strong and clearly layer structure, only paths drawn down manually with fewer points as possible, but every actions in SLOW and LAGGY.
Hardware:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
3,2 GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core
Memory: 32 GBSoftware: Illustrator 2021 with Active GPU
----When I try di reduce monitor resolution from 5120 x 2880 to 1600x900 the performance get better, but it's not possible to work in this way
Please, do Something.

A broader thread on performance issues is closed at this time but more info can be found here.
It seems Illustator struggles to perform well when rendering on higher resolution displays. The issue is exaggerated using Overprint preview with complex files.

Almost unusably slow on 5K 4.2GHz i7 iMac.

Isn't it crazy that my 13 year old MacBook Pro handles pixel preview perfectly well, super-fast... yet the supposedly super-fast iMac i9 5k with 32GB RAM clearly hasn't had Illustrator optimised for it yet, even this far on?
Come on Adobe, we're all paying for great design software... get your act together.
Any updates on this?

I'm also finding the current version almost unusable and it keeps hanging on me. Illustrator's performance continues to get worse with each new release.
I've already been previously experiencing white screen flickering that can only be resolved by restarting. With the latest Illustrator upgrade performance is now terrible. The last 2 Illustrator updates have made the software hang far more with more complex files with plenty of outlined text or nodes/anchors in the file.
The more and more troubleshooting I do with Illustrator the more it appears there is a hardware compatibility issue here. Current and previous versions run much better on machines with lesser hardware specs. Illustrator 2018 runs better but the UI is tiny in comparison to the 2019 version with UI scaling bumped up.
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB
AMD Radeon R9 M395 2GBResolution: 5120 x 2880
Mac OS 10.14.4Illustrator 23.0.3
UI Scaling is now set to line 2/4The white flickering is a separate issue that could be related. If you're finding this version of Illustrator unusable my only tip is to try downloading the latest 2018 release using the Adobe CC app.
I'll have to followup with both Adobe and Apple support again. Paying monthly/annually for apps with updates that only make the software less optimized is extremely frustrating.

Hello,
Same issue here. Lagging in Pixel Preview, a little bit faster in GPU Preview but still slower than usual. New machine with newly installed Adobe Illustrator and new monitor. Dictation is off by default.

When working in pixel preview mode on the retina screen of my iMac, the scrolling and zooming in Illustrator is very laggy, so laggy that the software is unusable for me. When I do the same on the low resolution screen, that is attached to my iMac, the performance is fine. I expect, that Illustrator performs in a usable way on the iMacs retina screen as well.
