Disabling GPU performance will not resolve everyone's issue unfortunately. Disabling GPU performance seems to avoid extremely long slowdowns when selecting complex objects for me, however it makes the entire program much slower and clunkier with each step or action I take. This definitely is not a solution for people experiencing some of the extreme lag being discussed here. For my own issue, I keep GPU performance enabled for a better experience but I have to try to avoid using the direct selection tool to make any large selections of complex objects otherwise the program will hang. Hiding Edges is another workaround that helps workaround my issue, however edges are usually crucial when you are trying to view the anchors and segments you are trying to move, align, or snap to. I'll only disable "Show Edges" when I find I am about to perform a step that will result in really bad lag.

I also have an iMac that is over 11 years old at the moment that out performs my current 5-year old 2015 iMac running the oldest supported version of Illustrator for High Sierra. The 2015 iMac has improved hardware but again, I think the hardware may be related to the issue.

This issue has to be addressed and narrowed down to specific hardware, operating system or software combinations that seem to be experiencing more extreme lag.

Is the Adobe team making any progress troubleshooting this issue and finding a solution for the next version?

Has the team been able to obtain the information they need to address this issue or narrow down the cause for a fix? Or will 2020 and 2021 suffer from the same performance issues? Can we update this thread to include 2020 with "Illustrator CC 2019" as well?

I'm all for helping out the support team but we have already tried making a new Mac admin user, clearing preferences, toggling Illustrator and OS features on and off, and the laggy poor performance remains.

It would be nice to not continue to put up with this subpar performance 5-days a week, for another year, while paying full price for Adobe CC.

Illustrator 2020 is still extremely poor performing/laggy. How soon can we expect this app to be optimized? Are we going to have to deal with this for 2 years straight? I'm using the 2018 version to get by and it is still really slow to use.

The comments below are clearly annoyed customers, paying monthly/annually for an application. Can you please confirm or deny if something is being done right now to address this key issue.

I've just upgraded to Catalina and can confirm the performance is still worse in Illustrator 2019 compared to 2018. The easiest way to recreate this issue is to take a larger amount of text, outline it for many anchors to be selected and compare how both versions perform. I'd be interested to compare as far back as 2017 or CS6 because it feels the performance has not improved at all with each version.

If you try to marquee select this text in both versions using the direct selection tool you will immediately notice the lag. The selections do not necessarily need to be that complex either to start noticing the poor performance. Another way to slow down each action is by having overprint preview enabled, which is a pain when trying to do any prepress work with traps/overprints. This performance slow down is still noticeable in Illustrator 2018 when overprint preview is enabled as well.

    macOS 10.15 Catalina
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
    Processor: 4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
    GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M395 2 GB
GPU Performance Enabled in Illustrator. App is too slow when disabled.
Not using Microsoft Office. Microsoft Remote Desktop is the only Microsoft App installed as far as I know.

Still poor performance with Illustrator 23.0.4 on Mojave 10.14.5 if you're looking for confirmation. Using the direct selection tool on slightly complex objects causes the app to move like molasses, while the selection tool doesn't seem to be impacted near as much.

Is Adobe focusing on addressing these performance issues or aiming to restore Illustrator to a previous state where it ran better? If the cause can be diagnosed can an update be pushed out sooner so customers are not paying to use software in a broken state or do we all need to rollback to 2018 or CS6?

If the future plan is to phase out old versions from being used, how can we use the current versions which have bugged tools/old features that use to work fine, and performance that is inferior to previous releases? Hopefully the team can be allowed to focus on bringing Illustrator back to a state that is more optimized than ALL previous versions and that clearly outperforms them.

Shouldn't we be expecting better performing software with improvements in hardware, not more incompatibility on machines with better specs? I have a 2008 iMac with 4GB of RAM running Illustrator 2018 that can outperform, and have features that work better compared to a 2015 5K iMac with 16GB of RAM running Illustrator 2018/2019.

In addition to the issues, Adobe plans to charge everyone more money in 2019 for Adobe CC? The core software we have used for years is performing worse with each release, and I hope Adobe focuses less on developing niche apps, and get the core programs like Illustrator and Photoshop working better than ever before. If you cannot resolve these issues, you should probably discount the software suite for the inconvenience caused by these updates.

Good luck to the team addressing these issues as we're relying on you to make this happen. I'd recommend having someone competent addressing your customers about the current state of fixing these issues and to perhaps make customers more aware when they can expect specific issues to be addressed.

Terrible performance here as well. Are Retina displays the problem? Another hardware incompatibility issue perhaps?

    My Setup:
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
    4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB
    AMD Radeon R9 M395 2GB

    Resolution: 5120 x 2880
    Mac OS 10.14.4

    Illustrator 23.0.3
UI Scaling is now set to line 2/4
    Cursor scaling is disabled.
Using second option for anchor/handle style.
Undo Counts are set to max: 200
    GPU Performance Enabled.
    Animated Zoom Off.
Data recovery set to save every 2 minutes.

Performance is better on Illustrator 2018 but this is just a workaround while we throw money into the cloud.

One thing that seems to be related to this issue for me is how many tabs you have grouped together. When grouping Layers/Artboards/Appearance/Graphic Styles I am unable to get the Layers/Artboards tabs to properly load without manually using the Window menu to select which one I want to view. When I remove Graphic Styles or Appearance from the group it appears to function properly again.

When the issue occurs, which has only been more recently for me, I can see the area around the name in each tab can be selected as well to avoid this non-responsiveness. It is almost like the bounding box around this text cannot be selected but the tab/button can be, as you can see it highlight when hovering over the tab.

Resource Fork in .ai files are removed in version 22.1. This is done to prevent an intermittent crash while saving Illustrator files to smb volume on macOS 10.13. Apple deprecated resource fork many years ago.

Works better but still doesn't work properly in 24.0.1.

You can copy text from Illustrator, paste it in Notepad, and then re-copy and paste it back to the Save-As window, but that is still a workaround.

You still are unable to copy/paste text from within the app.

    Jimmy commented  ·

Just to piggyback this issue, the copy/paste has been broken for numerous versions in one other key way. Previously we are unable to copy/paste text from Illustrator files and paste it in the Save-as window. This should also be addressed, as the notepad copy/paste has already been a workaround for something that should work like other Adobe apps.

Not sure if this is a Windows issue as well, but this has been something I have had to workaround the past few years on Mac with Illustrator CC.

    Hi All,

Apologies for the inconvieniecne caused to you due to this issue but we are not able to reproduce the issue at our end.
To nail down the issue further we would like the following information from your end :
    1) Setting in the font search dialog – (“Search Entire Font Name” or “Search first name only”)
It would be really helpful if you could provide a short video having steps to reproduce the issue.

Share with us at ShareWithAI@adobe.com in a Zip file.
Please mention the title of this issue as the subject of the mail.

    Thanks and Regards

I'm not exactly sure when, but currently this issue is no longer happening. It seemed to be fine in v24 today and is still okay in v24.0.1

When trying to type certain font names manually in the first field the placement of the letters jumps to the wrong spot.

When I type "Arial Bold", "Arial Regular", or "Cooper Black" the cursor or text placement seems to fail and not type the text in order from left to right. I saw one other post here with a similar issue but it could not be reproduced. This is the first time I have seen this so far on the new Illustrator CC 2020. After typing the "o" in "Arial Bold" the letters end up typing to the left of the letter instead of the right. This doesn't happen with every letter combo either, which is why I would suggest the font names above without the quotation marks.

Need More Info  ·  Yogesh Sharma responded

A couple of questions on this:

    1. Would it be okay to have a separate spec creation service much like the upcoming Adobe XD service? On this service, anyone with a link, can select any objects, and view its dimensions (W/H), colors, fonts etc. Or should it be inside Illustrator.

    2. Are you only going to create horizontal, and vertical dimensions? Or would you also like to have angular dimensions as well?

Please share more details about your workflow.

    Thanks,
    Yogesh

The original post appears to be correct. I am trying to use Version 23.0.3 with GPU Performance Enabled and turning off rulers does appear to boost performance/response time in Illustrator. Currently I am bouncing between 23.0.3 and the latest 2018 version of Illustrator to deal with ongoing performance issues of software.

I would change "COMPLETED", as a I feel Smart Guides are still clunky. Smart Guides haven't been the same since around CS2. Having to hold Command for improved accuracy was always an odd addition too.

I'm also finding the current version almost unusable and it keeps hanging on me. Illustrator's performance continues to get worse with each new release.

I've already been previously experiencing white screen flickering that can only be resolved by restarting. With the latest Illustrator upgrade performance is now terrible. The last 2 Illustrator updates have made the software hang far more with more complex files with plenty of outlined text or nodes/anchors in the file.

The more and more troubleshooting I do with Illustrator the more it appears there is a hardware compatibility issue here. Current and previous versions run much better on machines with lesser hardware specs. Illustrator 2018 runs better but the UI is tiny in comparison to the 2019 version with UI scaling bumped up.

    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
    4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB
    AMD Radeon R9 M395 2GB

    Resolution: 5120 x 2880
    Mac OS 10.14.4

    Illustrator 23.0.3
UI Scaling is now set to line 2/4

The white flickering is a separate issue that could be related. If you're finding this version of Illustrator unusable my only tip is to try downloading the latest 2018 release using the Adobe CC app.

I'll have to followup with both Adobe and Apple support again. Paying monthly/annually for apps with updates that only make the software less optimized is extremely frustrating.
