Align to key object automatic selection in align Panel
In the new update (24.2) I have "align to artboard" as a default but when I select multiple objects it automatically selects "align to key object" even after choosing the other multiple times. This is a new issue.

Hi Everyone,
We have fixed this bug in our latest release – v 24.2.1 which is available worldwide now. Thanks for your patience on this.
Please note that after upgrading you might still see that Align To sets itself to Align to Key Object. If you see this, please manually set the Align To to the required setting, and this reported bug will not happen again. You’ll need to this one time only.
The reason Align To might get set to Key Object after update is because Ai remembers your last Align To on subsequent launches as well. So, if your last Align To was Key Object before quitting/upgrading, after first multi-selection, it will set itself to Key Object. After you manually change it one-time, it will work fine.
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Not fixed. Still doing weird unexpected alignment and spacing things. It doesn't honour the key object and spaces to other random objects in selection. v24.2.3.

I have been trying to solve this problem since the update came out, jumping in and out of forums, and still this is not fixed. I have tried the solution Varun has laid out and it's still bugged. Tried resetting my preferences, still didn't work. And after a re-installation of the program, I still have the problem.
I hope this can be fixed in the form of a path soon, it's been really slowing me down.

Thanks for sorting this. It's been a while since a newly introduced bug had annoyed me so much. I've been using Illustrator on the Mac since 1996 and rarely need to search for solutions to issues like this.

Thanks Egor. I tried that and the problem resolved. I switched back from 'align to dartboard' to 'align to selection' and I don't have the issue anymore. Thank you! I had a problem with alignment after the update and had to change the 'align to' from 'align to key object' but didn't consider that the bug might be related to that panel or align function. Thanks again.

It worked without manual switching. I aligned to an object, then deselected, dragged the marquee around multiple objects, and it stayed on Align to Selection, which is what I expected.
Thanks again!

Great to hear it, Ted. I know how frustrating it was :) Did it work for you without manual switching once, or with?

Egor, the update seems to have done the trick. It remains to be seen if this is an issue with regular workflows, but right now it's definitely working correctly for staged versions of aligning items.
Thank you very much for the response, and for being on top of this issue!!

OK, Cory, thanks for the confirmation.
Please also try this — select objects, open Align panel, and manually change the 'Align To' mode to 'Artboard' and comment if it helps (it sounds stupid, I know, but it started working fine for me henceforth, when I changed it once). -
Ted, it’s a known bug in 24.2, and it’s 99% fixed in the hotfix 24.2.1.
Please update and try if it is fixed for you.
If not — please open the Align panel, change the 'Align to' mode there manually to 'Artboard' and try again.
Please comment here if it helped, and if it worked immediately after you updated or required the manual mode switch. -

key object is very buggy. Why is it there.

I have trouble with the Distribute part of this. Align is sort of OK. Latest version. I need the old way: select some objects, and distribute equally in distance between the tops or centers or sides. This totally does not work any more - and has not worked for several releases. I also have a new thing, where an illustration will just sort of lock up. I have to quit Illustrator, and re-open it - then it's fine. For a while.

This isn't actually fixed. I am running the latest release as mentioned above. I reset Align to selection per your instructions and it worked great! But a few days later, I restarted Illustrator and align defaulted back to key object. I have never set it to key object. I never use it. I hope you guys will continue to work on this.
