M1 Apple McBook - Crashing
I just got a new MacBook Pro with the M1 Apple chip. Illustrator keeps freezing and crashing. It also causes my whole computer to crash! I heard many other people are having the same problem. It is unusable by this point!
This issue (entire M1 McBook system freezes) is fixed for AI 25.0.1 and 25.1
This fix takes effect in a day’s time, if you still face this entire system freeze then please follow the steps to update
1). Backup your preferences and launch Illustrator with fresh preferences
2). Quit and re-launch Illustrator once again
3). Use Illustrator in your workflow
If you see AI crash and entire system is not freezing then please create a new issue.

Just purchased an M1 Mac mini 16gb - 512gb and it is constantly restarting because of a problem , even in the middle of basic computing. I've been on and off with Apple support and their theory is the Rosetta version of Illustrator. Still trying to rule out other possibilities... The actual app seems to be working fine, but it's hard to say.

Sounds like the chip doens´t have enough I/O. This is what´s needed to run Adobe Illustrator after all...Not enough I/O will result in stuttering of the app...or in the worst case :It will result in freezing for a few seconds or even minutes!

I reinstalled the computer from scratch and copied nothing across.
I then installed a new fresh installation of illustrator.
It has worked fine since then without crashing.
I know this is a pain, and has taken me a lot of time to get everything else how I want it, but at least I can use illustrator. -

Same thing here. So frustrating. It was working fine on my Macbook Pro 2016 and I decided to upgrade for a Macbook Air 2020 M1 and it's crashing the whole system.

On Dec 16th, Anonymous wrote, "After posting this thread, I have been contacted by Adobe “Illustrator Team” Members and they say that they have reconfigured AI for use of Apple Metal in place of OpenGL. To back up AI prefs, then throw them out. Start Illustrator, quit the app and then restart once again. This appears to have fixed all the crashing, freezes and slow downs. Used it all afternoon without problems."
I had the same experience and email. I followed the instructions and it worked for me - it's been a month and I've not had any crashes. Try following those steps? Maybe they're not tied to a particular user profile and they will work.
My fingers are crossed for you all.

I'm having the exact same issue as many people reported here. It's so frustrating. I couldn't work before because my iMac 2013 was too old and now I can't work because my MacBook Pro is too new, it's ridiculous.

Please fix this issue!!!! My boss purchased a new MacBook Air M1 chip to replace an old desktop and I am having nothing but problems running AI - constant spinning wheel, lagging, slow and not saving. I was so frustrated yesterday and couldn't complete a project because of the issues. I have had to bring my personal 2017 MacBook air to work and thankfully it runs AI seamlessly.

Hi,
I am using Illustrator on a new MacbookPro with M1 apple silicon.
While using the software it often starts to randomly freeze and after a few minutes everything works again.
Sometimes the whole mac is frozen for several minutes and Illustrator crashes completely.
Not seeing anyone eelse reporting the problem und no issue desiriped my adobe on the M1 side I was wondering what could be the reason for this problem.
We ask the professional team of Illustrator to fix this bug immediately.
If it is possible for someone from Illustrator Team to send an appropriate response.
Thank you!

I've had 4 hard crashes which required rebooting within the past hour. I should suspend my CC subscription until this works. I've had to buy Affinity Designer and Pixelmator as my workaround.
WTH did Adobe concentrate on making Lightroom M1 compatible over their other apps?
I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" with M1 chip, 16GB ram, and 2TB hard drive.
EDIT: Based on other comments here, I've reset my Illustrator preferences and turned off the GPU Performance option. That seems to solve the frequent crashing for me. But the choppiness during zooming in or out makes my brand new laptop seem like it's 10 years past its prime.
