Confirm. Worth adding it doesn’t happen in Photoshop, or in most apps this is tried in — releasing the mouse button / lifting a pen is handled correctly.

This issue is reproducible; it is not an interaction with the Wacom driver or device as I have reproduced the error on a computer with no Wacom tablet or driver, just a standard mouse. However, when experiencing this issue with a Wacom device it is fatal as the application stops responding altogether.
1. Create a new file in illustrator
2. Move the mouse over either the horizontal or vertical scrollbar slider
3. Click the left mouse button and move the mouse to scroll the artwork to left and right or up and down
4. Continue holding down the mouse button and move the mouse pointer outside of the Illustrator Window (right outside the window, not just away from the scrollbar region)
5. Release the mouse button and continue to move the mouse, the artwork will continue to move as if you were still holding the mouse button.
6. When using a mouse you can overcome the problem by clicking inside the Illustrator windows, however, when using a Wacom Pen or Cintiq, Illustrator becomes unresponsive to clicks and you are forced to close the application.

This issue was fixed for me by turning off GPU performance under the performance settings, incase this helps anyone else

@Egor thanks for that, didn't know about Alt in text mode, great tip. Also just discovered that holding Alt with selection tool active gives the distance to the edge of the artboard for the selected objects. Two new things learned today!

The scrollbar thing is definitely still there as a bug, but this is the first time I've run into it so the workaround is good for now, cheers!

Mike, I was able to get this behavior twice, but then it stopped. I tried different combinations to trigger it but failed to make it happen again.

What I can advise you though is too just ignore scrollbars. While editing text, Ai goes in 'Type context', and some hotkeys work differently, and this includes Space. Use Alt instead — hold it and the tool would temporarily switch to Pan. Does it work for you?

Using the handles in the horizontal and vertical scrollbars while text is being edited results in the cursor 'sticking' to the scrollbar and not releasing. Pressing esc, alt-tabbing away all seem to have no effect, after about 30s it stops and if I have minimised everything with Win+M. Unsure if it is purely time-based or not.

This only seems to occur when using a Wacom, the same interaction with a mouse does not suffer from the same sticky cursor.

Steps to repro:
- create a text object, and leave the cursor live inside the object. Doesn't seem to make a difference if any characters have been typed or not.
- using a wacom stylus (e.g. Inutos) click and drag on either the horizontal or vertical scoll handles. This should result in the scoll handle 'sticking' to the cursor (e.g. scrolling with all cursor movement), with no obvious way to release it.
- Clicking within the scrollbar also causes abnormal behaviour (instead of scrolling in the direction clicked relative to the handle), but this is harder to identify exactly what's going on. It locks the system up for a while, and appears to have stacked all the inputs while in the locked state.

Expected behaviour:
Clicking and dragging a scrollbar handle while editing text would be expected to scroll as normal, and either cancel the text edit in its current state, or keep the edit active, either would make sense.

I am using an XP-Pen 22E pro and have the latest update of illustrator and driver as well for the tablet, this just started happening today. I have tried updating and restarting my laptop, restarting AI and unplugging cords and replugging them in and nothing is seemingly working

This is an issue in versions of illustrator after 27.9.3. The wacom device is a cintiq pro 24, that is up to date with no unique configuration. Please let me know if you need specific information on that. The OS is Windows 10 home 22h2

I'm using the latest drivers from wacom 6.4.5-5, and the most current version of illustrator (V28.3)

I noticed this yesterday, not long after I updated Illustrator 28.2, and I updated to 28.3 today and it's still happening.

This does not occur in Photoshop, or other software with a scrollbar. I don't have InDesign installed, so I can't test that.

Which Wacom pen and tablet model do you use specifically? What is the driver version that you have installed? Is it the latest one?
Does it ever happen if you use other means to pan, or with other scrollbars within Ai?
Does it ever happen in other applications? What about Photoshop or InDesign?
When did it start to happen, if you are able to recall it?
