Selections are automatically deselected after a few seconds
Lately, Illustrator will deselect anything I select with either the selection or direct selection tool (doesn't matter which one) and it makes for a very frustrating experience. Anyone have an idea to fix?

Selecting a second image with a marquee doesn’t include it in the bounding box
The problem here is with image objects. It matters how you select them. If you select them the wrong way, you get no selection handles, or scaling handles.
Using just the regular selection tool, if you Shift + drag over one image object to select it, then shift drag over another image object, you get no selection handles for scaling. If you shift drag over both image objects you also get no selection handles.
If you shift and click on one image object, then shift click the other, it works fine.
If you drag a single selection over both image…5 votes -
Locked and/or hidden objects still become selected
The object is locked and/or not visible, yet when the layer is selected, all objects including the locked and hidden objects become selected and move when they should not.
(Illustrator 26.0.1 / OS Catalina 10.15.7)

Objects become locked
Objects become locked in place for no reason - no object is set to lock.
This happens randomly when working with objects / shapes / strokes. The only way to get rid of the issue is to restart Illustrator.

Copy via Layers panel “target” selection doesn’t populate external clipboard (works only with Selection Tool)
When selecting objects using the target (circle) icon in the Layers panel, copy/paste works inside Illustrator but fails when pasting into external applications (e.g. Figma, TextEdit).
The same objects, when selected using the Selection Tool, copy/paste correctly across apps.
Tested on AI 30.3 & 29.8.6 on Mac Tahoe 26.3.1
Steps to reproduce
- Create a simple shape (e.g. rectangle or circle)
- In the Layers panel, click the target icon (circle) for the object
Press Cmd+C
- Switch to another app (e.g. Figma, Sketch, TextEdit, browser)
Paste (Cmd+V)Actual result
- Nothing is pasted in external applications
- Clipboard appears…3 votes -
Illustrator 2026 adds a previously selected object to a newly selected one when moving the new one
macOS Sequoia 15.6
Illustrator 30.0Just selecting and moving basic objects is not functioning correctly. Was this tested at all? I've restarted the app, I've restarted my machine. It's just buggy AF. I've had to revert to previous version just to get a simple chart done.

Enclosed Mode toggle button in Control and CTB
Illustrator now has a dedicated option to permanently toggle Enclosed Selection Mode, in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display > Select Objects only within Marquee.
However, there’s no hotkey we can assign to this option (or any other option in Preferences!) or a button outside or Prefs — in Control panel or Contextual Task Bar... Properties I don’t mention, since it’d certainly want me to have nothing selected.Originally by Derek Watson.

Direct Selection Tool selects objects by their center points
When using the Direct Selection Tool to make a selection within another object via click and drag, the tool automatically selects the outer object, regardless of its fill setting.
In previous versions of Illustrator, it would not select such an object if it had no fill, which made it easy to select multiple paths and points that were contained within an object with a simple click and drag gesture. Now, this is rendered impossible and makes the tool much more tedious to use.
This absolutely needs to be fixed!

Selecting & deselecting objects is buggy too
While working in a file:
Attempting to select more than one object at a time to move them simultaneously works, but then I cannot deselect the objects by clicking the art board as in all previous versions of Illustrator.
I have to click on each object at a time to deselect them. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough that it becomes an issue with work efficiency.3 votes -
Sometimes click outside artboard to deselect object not working
Illustrator v24.0.2
I don't know what triggers this, but sometimes there's error in selection that causing the object to be highlighted and can't deselect it by clicking outside artboard with selection tool.
This is getting frustrating. I really hope Illustrator get a renewal just by rebuilding the program from scratch without changing the initial tool since the bug is just too much.workaround :
If the object is a grouped object, then double click it to enter isolation mode, and double click again to get out.
If not, then, save and close and re-open the document.3 votes -
Severe selection lag on direct click (Marquee selection works fine) - Illustrator 30.3 - macOS Tahoe (M4)
Hi everyone,
I am experiencing a critical issue that is completely breaking my workflow in Adobe Illustrator, and I suspect it might be a specific bug in the latest version or a compatibility issue with the new hardware/OS.
The Problem:
Whenever I try to select any element by clicking directly on it, the program takes a long time to react, select the object, and display the bounding box (the resizing and rotation handles). This delay makes it impossible to work efficiently or even copy/paste quickly. The strange part is that if I select the object by dragging the cursor (marquee/area…

Select Same Fill is disabled
I recently migrated my Mac system from iMac Retina 5k to Apple M2 Ultra Mac Studio running Tahoe 26.2. Updated my full Creative Suite (Illustrator 30.1) and all was working fine will all latest updates and all until I began to work on basic vector shapes. Seems like I cannot select any fill doing Select > Same > Fill as I did for years before. Do I need to delete my preferences perhaps? I even tried very basic shapes, 3 squares, and option to Select Same Fill is greyed out...
Now I will push "post idea" button hoping that it…2 votesGot fixed with a Preferences reset. If you have a similar problem — please back up you Preferences folder before resetting, for the team to study them.

Cannot Resize Anything, version 30.0, went back a few updates hoping it was a bug of the new version but it's still the same.
Please fix this resizing problem I can't work.
2 votesIt happens when one accidentally disables Bounding Box with Cmd+Shift+B hotkey. You can try to toggle it back with the same shortcut or via View > Show Bounding Box.

Selection Tool grabbing top layer rather than selected object in Layers panel
I’m aware that there are workarounds to this issue, but being something I have always done through habit, I don't like that this has suddenly changed on me. I reset my settings to default, but cannot find anything that goes back to how I used to select objects.
Okay into the issue... I usually would select objects in the Layer panel, I use overlapping objects of the EXACT same size, ones with pattern vectors and gaps and lower layers of gradient colours, and if I want to edit this colour layer or move it around my canvas, I would normally…

When selecting all objects, there will be very severe lag, and even software crashes.
When I select all the objects, if there are many objects, it will cause the software to crash.

Illustrator highlights anchors on mouse over when anchors are below other objects
Mouse hints sometimes don't accurately communicate what the user is about to do
As an example of the problem, create one rectangle with a fill, then create a second rectangle with a fill that encompasses one of the points of the first rectangle. Then, using the direct selection tool, hover over that point. The mouse hint indicates that the user is about to select that point. Click, and the second rectangle will be selected instead, because it is over top of the point.
If that point can't be selected in this way, the mouse hint shouldn't make it appear as…

Eliminate the "sticky" selection tool
The latest 27.8.1 version selection tool acts like a magnet after an object selection and will often drop/release the selected object with wild and random predictability. It's a horrible bug. Unfortunately, I have to use Illustrator in my job. This is nothing like I've seen in all the decades of using Illustrator. Lots of UNDOs. I'm going to revert back to the previous version.
