A way to lock colors to prevent them from changing in Recolor dialog
When recoloring art, it would be AWESOME to have a lock function next to the swatches. There is already a way to lock a swatch that you don't want to recolor, but it'd be nice if, as you cycle through the swatch/recolor options, you could lock or "freeze" ones you like and continue to recolor the unlocked swatches.

Illustrator doesn't let me use 3D objects and it automatically closes every time I want to use that option
When I installed Illustrator files from the Adobe Materials website to use with 3D objects, it stopped working, when I try to select something and convert it to 3D, Illustrator automatically closes. I already reinstalled the program but it's still the same. How do I be able to use it again?

Move document tabs under cursor when closing documents
When closing multiple document tabs using the X button on the side of the tab, the next document will move under the cursor. However, the tab size changes based on window size, filename length, etc. A better way would be to resize tab length after the cursor is moved away. The result would be that if you close Tab 1, Tab 2 would slide over and the X button would appear under the cursor. Many tabs could be easily closed without moving the cursor.

Allow formatting of bullets & numbers in lists
Bullets and numbers currently inherit the formatting of the first character in the list item. This is not very flexbile and creates issues when in one list there are bold items and regular items.
There should be an option to add formating to the bullet as well as the numbers. Also: there should be an option to use any kind of character of a dingbats font as a bullet. Bonus would be if any kind of shape could be used.71 votes -

I would like to see the output of the subject created by the generated AI with each part layered by part.
I would like the subject created by the generated AI to be output with parts divided into layers by part (right eye) (left eye) (outline) (eyebrows), etc.

An object with a freeform gradient fill makes the coloring control in the tool panel switched to None
In the tool panel we have three indicator buttons, which show the current type of fill/stroke for the selection — Fill, Gradient, None.
Illustrator switches it to None, when an object with a freeform gradient fill is selected.I can understand why it probably happens. Since freeform gradients are not technically gradients, and using this mode converts an object into a dynamic container for generating a triangular mesh, it makes sense for Illustrator to not display the proper indicator here — the container has no fill... but it makes no sense for a user. Improved text editing while within an envelope
Currently if you want to edit text that's inside an envelope, depending on how warped it is, it can be difficult to edit the text directly. The workaround is to 'release' the envelope in the 'Envelope Distort' menu, edit the text, then reapply the text to the envelope using 'Make with top object'. Perhaps improve the text editing to match the shape and size of the envelope or have a popup window that displays the text in normal format and edit it that way.
In my example, the black boxes is the original text but editing has proved difficult.3 votes -
Allow to merge layers faster, like in Photoshop
So, what I think could easily be done is just taking the already existing Layer Merge Down code from Photoshop, and literally just pasting it where it would work. I think this would be very useful.

Copy and Pase Layer with sorted and named sublayer looses all the structure after pasting.
Keep the layer structure that is copied and paste it in the same structure after pasting into new location.

Rename artboards and layers easily
Please develop a method to easily rename artboards and layers. An option to switch between layers by pressing tab would be great. An option to find and replace text in artboard names would be perfect.
At the moment renaming artboards is a time consuming process because you have to doubleclick every artboard separately and enter text.3 votesAi now support pressing Tab while renaming difference items in panels, including layers, artboards, symbols, etc.
Find and Replace in names is not yet an option, but there are many free scripts that allow that.

Menu Item Move Between Creative Cloud Apps
Suggest adding a menu selected item to navigate between CC apps. When working in AI and need to move image to PS there is no shortcut for this. Moving between Plugins is way easer. May be include a menu selected or button to quickly move the image.

Overwriting Existing Workspaces and Toolbars
If I wanted to update my custom Workspace, I can create a new Workspace and give it the same name as before. When I do that, I am warned that the name already exists, and that clicking 'OK' will overwrite the old one. This is great. But if I try the same process for updating a custom Toolbar, it makes me choose another name. Then I have to remember where these files are stored in the Finder, go to that location, delete the old Toolbar, and rename the new one. Please make the process for updating an existing Toolbar as…

Select Compound Shapes by visible parts only
When working with Compound Shapes, I don't' want to 'feel' the original paths which in many cases cover paths beneath.
Make it work like a Clipping Mask.

Liquid Page Layout (Artboards)
I would love a "liquid Layout" feature like InDesign has for more easily converting artwork and pages sizes simultaneously.
There are many times I create posters on a 11x17 artboard and need to easily reduce the art and page sizes to 5x7 for flyers.
InDesign has had this feature for a long time and I feel it would definitely be useful to my workflow.12 votes -
Select Same Appearance on a mixed selection
If I select an object with a particular appearance, I can call Select > Same > Appearance command to select all object which have the exact same stack of the appearance attributes.
But if I have two objects with different appearances, and want to select all objects that have the same appearance as any of them (either of two!) — nothing is going to happen!
The command is active, but the selection stays the same... Not cool.
Sure, I can first find the first batch, lock or hide it, and then do the same for the second object, then unlock/unhide…

Disable Layer Search in Layers Window

Please allow for disabling the layer search function. The Layers window search field randomly activates, especially when opening new files from a template and when opening exitisting files to make revisions. This is incredibly frustrating. For example; when I open a file and try to select the type tool by hitting the T key, I just end up typing a line of T's in the layer search bar. 3D & Materials: separate colour/material for extrusion
Please introduce the ability to apply separate colour and material to the extruded part of a 3D shape. There are multiple examples where such a feature would immensely help recreating real world objects. For example: laser cut plywood (burned edges, parallel to the surface), slice of bread, etc. Basically, any cut object which interior is different to its surface.
