Align to Artboard
All version of Illustrator before CC 2018 the Align to.. command would stick to Align to Artboard unless you clicked on another object to define a Key Object.
This upgrade keeps jumping back to align selections.
We have the fix available in the latest release. Please update Illustrator using Adobe Creative Cloud application to the latest build for version Illustrator CC 22.1.
Please refer to our knowledge base FAQ – https://illustrator.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/1844590 if you face difficulty in update.

Every time I open a new template .ait
alignment switches to align to selection.
and I have to switch it back to align to artboard.
if I create a new document it stays the same, unfortunately I mostly use templates.Windows 7pro Adobe Illustrator CC 2018

Need align to artboard to default for me as well, instead of going back to align to selection.

Just another user here, that relies on align to artboard all the time to do my living chiming in here.

Align section disappears for single object, even if align to artboard is selected
I have Illustrator CC version 22.
I selected a single asset, while the Align was previously set to Align to Artboard and expected the Align section to appear in
properties but it didn't.The previous version, before the properties panel update, would show the Align section for a single asset if Align to Artboard was previously set.
When I select another object, however, the Align section shows up just fine.

Pretty much all alignment and anything approaching precision completely absent. Why are we your unpaid Beta testers?
Horizontal guides won't budge under any circumstance.
Snap to… forget it — just a nightmare. And so many other things, which frankly… I'm lost for words. -

align to artboard option resets back to align to selection.

Since the CC 2018 Illustrator update, the align tools no longer align assets to the art board (centre, left, right, top etc) the asset doesn't even budge.

To summarize what we are fixing:
Method :
1. Launch Illustrator
2. Create new document with 10 artboards
3. Go to Window > Align
4. From flyout menu select Show Options
5. Change "Align To" option to "Align to Artboard"
6. Select artboard tool
7. Exit artboard tool
8. Observe the Align To option in Align panelResult : "Align To" option changes to "Align to Selection"
Expected : "Align To" should be preservedDo mention if you intended something extra via this bug.

It works fine for me (Windows).

Not sure how often the Adobe Techs check these comments, but perhaps there is some way to make the "Align to" a Preferences Setting. I do agree with other commenters I have seen posting about this issue, it has been a nuisance to not have the default be "Align to Artboard."

Completely agree. At least give us the option to choose which one it defaults to. But like Sam says....when only one object is selected it should default to Align to Artboard.

Align To Selection, Artboard, Key Object — No Longer Persistent, since 2018 Update

Chatted friday with Adobe Tech, and they easily reproduced this BUG. Now the question is how badly does Adobe feel this needs to be fixed. For me, I'm back to 2017 as I use this constantly to keep elements on a page aligned. Verify alignment for art sent to me. etc. I can't trust this with 2018 and it will cost me money.

And it also comes up as align to selection even when there is only one object selected which renders the tool completely useless

If I knew WHY it kept doing it, it would be helpful.. Just seems like how you select items pushed the align to.. to different things. Really frustrating to not be able to rely on something as simple as an Align Tool being consistent.

I want to second this issue. Illustrator 2018 seems to default to "Align to Selection" and even if I change it to "Align to Artboard" it will change back when I do things, say, like click the artboard tool.

it would be great if align to artboard could be set to persistent.
previous to the 2018 update I did not have to switch from align to selection every time. Align to artboard is what I use almost exclusively.
