XD and PS defaults to open .ai files - AI files should open with Illustrator only
Working in windows 10. After updating XD and Illustrator to 2019, all my existing .ai files have been defaulted to open in XD. I can use the "Open With" option to successfully open .ai files in Illustrator but the default always stays with XD no matter how many times I select Illustrator.
Uninstalled XD. AI files cannot locate Illustrator as primary software for launch.
NOTE:
Edited by Adobe Staff to generalise the issue.

Just wanted to jump back in on this as I'm having the same issue. No matter what I do (and I've done everything the adobe helpline has said to do) I cannot get .ai or .psd files to default to their proper programs.
I have to right click on each file and tell them to open in Illustrator or Photoshop. If I just try opening them then I still get a window popping open asking what program to open them in.
I was told to uninstall any previous versions of the program only to then be told to reinstall them and use the 2018 version vs. the 2019 as the 2019 version has too many glitches.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for reporting the issue. We are working on it.
It would be helpful if you give me some more information regarding this issue.
1. Which Adobe application is taking control over .a file?
2. If its XD please update to latest version of XD and try it out.Regards,
Ritika

Can confirm the Windows update (10 Pro - Version 17134.471) has also fixed this issue for me too. Had to select a Adobe Illustrator file and "Open with" to get it working again, the same for Adobe Photoshop and .psb files.

If the issue is still not solved at your end. Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels - https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.
Before you do that are you manually able to change file association of .ai file to another application say Notepad.exe ? There is another issue with file association going around. Please check this link: https://www.howtogeek.com/fyi/microsoft-broke-windows-10s-file-associations-with-a-botched-update/

I've been searching and searching for a way to fix this, and yet still nothing!!! I've waited to "chat" with Adobe help for over two hours. Nothing seems to work. I've gone through ever "fix" that's out there to no avail.

Windows 10 and all apps up to date, still having an issue with Illustrator & Photoshop not being recognised as default programs! This has been going on for far too long now. Please can someone from Adobe confirm when this is going to be fixed??

Only 4 votes?... really we have very bad luck. Exactly the same over here... even tryed to change Windows registry, but nothing. All AI files are stil thinking their selves belong only to Illustrator version 22 (2019 is version 23)

Same here, 'always open with' doesn't work. When trying to import into after effects it doesn't recognise the file as AI either. this is after updating to CC19.

Updating XD does not fix it here (Windows 10). Still can't open Vector Smart Objects (now I get the error message "Das ursprüngliche Smartobjekt konnte nicht bearbeitet werden, weil die Anwendung, in der das Smartobjekt erstellt wurde, nicht gestartet werden konnte") and still can't select Illustrator as default for .ai files.

Hi,
Same problem. The XD icon doesn't appear anymore and the icon remains white. No Illustrator icon ant I still have to select an application by double-cliking or by "open with"
