Eyedropper tool not showing correct colors sampled outside of Illustrator
When I click and drag the eyedropper tool outside of Illustrator to sample a color from something else (a website, pdf document, etc.), the color isn't correctly picked up.
For example, if I move the eyedropper over something orange, it shows in Illustrator as blue or black; even if I sample a large white space, it shows in Illustrator as a different color. It seems to only be showing sampled colors as white, neutral, black/gray, and shades of blue.
The program is up-to-date.
I tried it in two browsers, Chrome and Safari, and the results were the same in both.
I tried quitting and restarting Illustrator and both browsers and nothing changed. When I sample colors inside of Illustrator, it reads correctly.
We have seen this issue specific to macOS 10.15. Enabling “Screen Recording” access right to Illustrator resolved this issue.
You can change this setting by going to Apple > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Screen Recording and add Illustrator Application.
Please try this and reply in comment if the above suggestion worked for you.

This worked, thank you!! This has been driving me nuts.

As Rama mentioned, Apple has restricted the screen recording access in macOS 10.15 To sample the color from other windows user has to allow Illustrator to access Screen Recording permission.
This can be done by going to Apple > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Screen Recording and add Illustrator Application. Here is a link to read more about it: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/cc-apps-macmojave.html

When I go to select a color from outside the Illustrator window, I must click on the gray illustrator background, hold down the mouse and move outside the illustrator window to even grab a color outside of the program. However now, whenever I try to do this it only picks up the background colors of my desktop image, even when I am moused over a different window, image or icon. Id love to be able to grab from colors outside the illustrator window, for example things on my Safari pages or images.
