This is so annoyingly frustrating. I'm trying to organize logo, badge, and graphic element assets to export for a client, and I've got 3 .ai files, each with 200–400 artboards, and naming these is an absolute nightmare. I *KNOW* I'm not missing any artboards, yet, invariably, when I get down to the bottom of the artboards window and then scroll back up, sure enough, at least one of the artboards has renamed itself to "Artboard [number]." I've taken to saving after every 3 artboard renamings, and even that doesn't work every time. Adobe, for the love of god, PLEASE FIX THIS.

August 14 2026, and this issue STILL persists, and it's seriously one of THE MOST INFURIATING bugs that has plagued Illustrator for years, still with no resolution. I'm a visual identity designer who works with, at times, AI files with HUNDREDS of artboards that need to be custom named and exported, and I can't express how enraged I get when I custom name 300 artboards, then scroll back up to the top of the artboards window only to find that at least one artboard has renamed itself to "Artboard." Please, for the love of god, freakin' fix this issue once and for all. It's a problem, it's been a problem, and it is a major interruption in workflow for people like me who work on files with many artboards.

Artboard naming, is very inconsistent and creates unexpected results.
If I rename it quite often won't lock, just defaults to previous, if I use a file and save as for a series of other files, they'll revert to the original fee names, even after successful renaming of previous files in the series.
The artboard's struggle to export with correct names, sometimes if duplicate names appear it will save both with a 1 after some whilst ignoring others. With no error message.

July 2025, version 28.7.1 and still an issue. It completely ruins the workflow by adding unnecessary steps to rename artboards that already had correct names. Very annoying, hope you fix it soon.

The same thing is happening to me. After renaming and pasting the text, then I switch tabs, then go back, it goes back to "Artboard" name.

Often happens with whichever is the first Artboard.

This issue happens to me all the time.

Best way to reproduce is to set up multiple artboards (10+), make sure there is lots of content in them, a few images etc then try renaming.

The first one will revert back to the original name. I shared a video with Adobe as I was able to reproduce this twice today alone.

I was never able to stumble upon it or reproduce it intentionally :(
On one hand it makes me happy (because this would suck!), on the other hand I WISH to have it — because this would have helped me to push it further.

No matter what method I try: pasting each one or typing it anew, using Tab to go to the next one, renaming all at once (we can now select all artboards with Artboard Tool or in the panel, hit Enter to open Artboard Options and enter the common name and Ai will use it and add numbers, like we can do in Explorer/Finder with files)... nothing works, the names stick for me, with the panela closed, collapsed, reopened, file close, Ai relaunched...

Please try to reproduce it in the new file, give the EXACT steps (the video helps, even though it didn’t for me), and list all the specs you can. If the test file keeps behaving like this each time you try — share it (perhaps it’s something within it that makes the bug pop!)
Time to figure this out finally.

When I paste text into an artboard's name in the Artboard Panel, and press RETURN/ENTER, the name appears correctly in the Artboard Panel, but does not update on the actual artboard title on the main screen. Thinking it was ok because the panel displayed it correctly, I exported the artboards. All resulting files had "artboard 1, artboard 2, etc". I saved the file and reopened. All of the names were gone from the Artboard Panel.

Temporary workaround: If I paste text into the Artboard Panel and press RETURN, it won't update on the actual board, but as long as I double-click the name again in the panel, type anything manually, and press RETURN, it will update and export correctly.

When pasting into the artboard name in the top control panel, it works fine. It's only in the Artboards Panel. I have over 100 artboards in this file and the names are very long, so that's the most efficient place to enter them all.

This is reproducible. As long as I am pasting text into the name, it will not update elsewhere including exporting unless I go back into the name and edit it further.

I think it started happening within the last few months.

Yeah, I've just come to the realization that if it hasn't been fixed in 7 years, it's just never going to be fixed. After renaming all my artboards, I go back to my first artboard, delete a character, and retype it. Just part of my workflow now.

Here we are 4.5 years since I found this reported and it's still a bug. 

Here's a breakdown of my workflow:
Name my artboards in the artboard palette, and when I'm ready, I export those artboards in Export for Screens. 

The bug presents itself as:
a) The artboard name in the Export for Screens is not what I named my artboard in the palette. It's an artboard name from before my edit—even if that edit was entered 20-30 minutes ago.

b) The name in Export for Screens is correct, but the exported asset still has the name before my edit.

It appears that when entering an artboard name in the palett, it only sticks the landing 50% off the time.

I can confirm that as of 1/2/25, Illustrator v 29.1.0 still has this bug, and it's infuriating, especially when you have files with sometimes hundreds of artboards. I do branding and visual identity, and when I'm compiling all of the various final branding assets for my clients, I put them into one Illustrator file to organize them, and then export them out in their various file formats. After spending hours custom-naming artboards so that they export out with appropriate file naming, and *knowing* that I didn't miss any artboards, it's extremely frustrating, to see files named "Artboard 199" etc. in a long list of exported files with their correct naming.

Still an issue. Working in an industry that is critical for board names to be correct for image association outside of Illustrator. Names of boards continue to revert when double clicking on the board name and pasting. Beyond frustrating bug. Please address!

Having issues here too - come on Adobe... this is a really frustrating time-waster when working with hundreds of artboards that need unique names for exporting - please fix this bug!
Happens when renaming, then switching between open .ai files...

March 2024, Version 27.6.1 and it's still an issue. Please, fix it!
