Illustrator documents open to a red / black screen
Resizing the document window rectifies the issue, annoying nevertheless
We have the fix available in the latest release. Please update Illustrator using Adobe Creative Cloud application to the latest build for version Illustrator CC 23.0.

I just completed the updates on ai, photoshop and indesign. I am also getting a black screen when I go to open files with any function: double clicking, open or recently opened in .ai
Is there a fix for this that I am missing? I am unable to complete my work! EEEKKKEEEKK
Thanks for any suggestion on resolving this issue quickly. -

Update: Only happens with external display connected. On built in display, this is not an issue.

Having the same issue but also while opening .ai-files from the finder.
changing the Window size (by pulling/dragging the edge of th window) "solves" the problem as well (view changes back from all red to normal preview of the file). -

(I have emailed Sarah with attachments directly, but I thought it would be useful to have this here as well. Obviously attachments aren't shown here)
Hi Sarah,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I can’t believe I didn’t try it before but deleting my preferences as usual fixed the problem. However it’s always a mess trying to get my settings back to how I liked them, so I’m still using them at the moment just without GPU acceleration.
I thought I’d email back with various attachments you requested in case they are useful for finding the issue.
- About my mac window attached;
- External displays, yes I have two. An Apple Cinema Display and a Wacom Cintiq 13HD. I have also attached the Displays tab of the overview window.
- The black screen issue is happening with every file, new or opened.
- The black screen occurred regardless of how it was opened (file>open, double clicking, using recent files)
- And a zip of my illustrator preferences are also attached. I’ve upgraded through numerous versions of Illustrator, so I suspect it’s some legacy item in the preferences that hasn’t converted very well. Many thanks for looking into this!

Hi Sarah,
got a similar issue after updating to 22.1 – just that my window turns red instead of black.
I'm using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017), Radeon Pro 555 2GB, macOS High Sierra 10.13.3
The issue happens both just using the internal display as well as with an external display connected. It affects all files I tried so far, both CMYK and RGB documents.
The computer otherwise performs normal, GPU acceleration in Photoshop and InDesign works without issues as well.
Best,

In Photoshop, when editing a smart object in Illustrator, the entire window is solid red color. You can do anything, however, none will be visible.
With that window open, editing a second smart object, will return normally. Switching to the first opened window will still shop solid red.
Opening vector files from the Finder is going well.
Turning off GPU, instantly resolves the problem.
This problem occurred when updated to Illustrator 22.1 and Photoshop 19.1.2. Prior to this update, there was no problem.
I am using a Eizo ColorEdge CG245W Monitor. -

Hi Jason,
Sorry for the inconvenience caused .As this not a generic issue I would require some information from you.1. About your Mac? You can send a screenshot of the about mac info.
2. Are you using any external display?
3. Is it happening with all files?
4. Is it happening when you open the file from File->open or on double clicking or both?
5. I would also need your Adobe preferences file. Thanks,

When opening any file with GPU acceleration the whole document window is black. All of the toolbars, panels, menus etc work as normal. Just the document window is black. Turning off "Preview on GPU" fixes this, but obvious lacks GPU power this way.
I've tried using the stock GPU drivers with MacOS, and the latest NVIDIA drivers, both with the same result.
This is running on a Mid 2012 MacBrook Pro Retina, with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GPU.

On Multipage PDF import, document window turns red with GPU Performance turned on. When unchecked window renders correctly. 2017 MacBook Pro 15", 3.1Ghz, 16GB Ram, Radeon Pro 560 4 GB, Illustrator V22.1

I get the same thing but with a black screen.
The resizing of the window does fix it as well as changing preview to CPU.
This happened after the update to 22.1.Using Macbook Pro with NVIDia GeForce GT 650M 1GB.
