Save now takes longer in updated 2020 version
When I save, even a blank document, it takes Illustrator a lot longer than the previous version to save.

Has not been addressed in 24.0.2
Turn off all the PDF compatible stuff and it will save very fast.

Slow save speeds are being reported by everyone on my design and production teams. I've done complete re-installs to try and fix the issue, but still getting reports of slow load times and needing to do "Save As" commands because illustrator won't save files to the same name.
Mac OS Catalina 15.10.2
Illustrator 2020 24.0.3
Plug-In: Hotdoor CADTools 12.1.2 -

Not resolved. 24.0.3 still takes wayyyy longer to save docs of any size.

Running 24.0.3 here and having the same issue. Saving a copy as pdf takes way too long. A two line text artboard takes about 5 min to save as pdf. Come on Adobe!

Also having slower save times since updating to 24.0.2 on mac. Also having the same issue as described below by 'gianni', in that saving new pdf from ai file, doesn't replace the old one. HUGE issue, and needs fixing ASAP.

I just updated to 20.0.2 version and I have not noticed any difference in saving. Is there something that could be fixed?

I'm also running into issues with opening and saving 40 MB sized illustrator files on my Windows 10. Seems that this problem only happened after upgrading to Illustrator CC 2020. I've unchecked the save in background option as well as looked at my RAM size ratios (which seem to be fine). My files are still slow and every time I try to save my progress it takes forever and usually starts with "Illustrator is Not Responding" notice. I'm trying "save as" and unchecking the PDF compatibility and Compression options in the save dialogue box for my new saved version. Hope it works. Adobe, please advise.

The illustrator 2020 version takes extremely long to save a file, even it is a large file...

Turning off the save in background option fixed what was bugging me. My work process in Illustrator has always been to do a quick CMD S, followed by a CMD W to save and close a document open. Since this feature was added to save in background, the commands so close together would pop up a notice window letting me know the document was being saved and would be closed when done, which happens every time. Ideally that box could have a "don't show again" check box because you can't do anything till you hit okay. Figure I'll just leave the save in background off cause most AI files for me tend to be smaller and save/close quickly.

Come on Adobe, please put it back to where it was in the previous version. This is slowing us all down and spoiling our work flow!

When the background saving is happening and you continue to make changes to the active file do they get added to the save? It seems as though the save percentage restarts when you make changes.... any ideas?

Go to Preferences
Go to File handling and clipboard option of preferences and uncheck the option “Save in Background”That's what worked for me. Now it saves without any issues.

This still doesn't help speed up my saving ability. Still taking around 8 minutes to save a 50mb file. I should also mention I'm running on Catalina.

Saving .ai or export PDF now takes about 1.5 minutes (illustrator 2020, vs 24.0.1, macOS Mojave 10.14.3) instead of few seconds on illustrator 2019.

"Save in Background" is a real hindrance to my fast-paced workflow. I work with many very small documents (100 kb) and I have to wait for the "...file is being saved" just to close a file & move on. Thanks for pointing out how to disable it.

So glad for this forum. I hated that long save time. All better now!

saving a file lags a lot - and the popup window announcing that "file is being saved" is very annoying.

The issue seems to be the background save.
When i disabled that, the long save times stopped and it works like before the upgrade to 2020
