Using Color Mixer in Control panel for stroke changes the color of the fill instead
I encountered this problem as seen in the GIF.
Selecting a stroke or fill from the control bar menu changes the active appearance. When using sliders, it doesn't. i have tested on different Windows 11 machines and different documents. Replicated the issue every time.
AI 29.0.1
We have fixed this issue in 29.2 release.
Please update your Illustrator through Creative Cloud Desktop.

If I select the dropdown in the upper or left toolbar to adjust the stroke color of a path or object and then adjust the color, the adjustment instead changes the fill color. This is insufferable. It happens every time when I shift-click the dropdown, and most of the time that I regular-click the dropdown. It happens with swatch selection, slider selection, etc. Happens every time, even after restart, etc.
I realize this is submitted in Beta Bugs, but this is not a Beta version of Illustrator. My apologies, this is my first time using UserVoice. My version of Illustrator is 29.1 and I am running macOS Sequoia 15.2 on Apple Silicon.

Still busted. I asked the AI how to fix the issue and it said "One or more words in your prompt violate user guidelines", which is weird.

I added this to feature request: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/49132274
Clicking the swatch drop down opens the different swatch color options.
Please update with these shortcut key options:
Shift + clicking the swatch drop down opens the Color Mixer options.
Option + clicking the swatch drop down opens the gradient options.
Command + clicking the swatch drop down opens the pattern options.(Edited by admin) -

If you try to change stroke color from top toolbar, you can't if the fill is selected on left toolbar and vice versa (see attached images)

Hi, when it will be fixed - there was an update to 29.1 and this is still broken - we are talking about basic function, not a new feature ...

In Adobe Illustrator 2025, when using the “improved” color mixer launched by Shift+Clicking the Stroke Color thumbnail in the top bar (Essentials Classic Workspace), adjustments to the color unexpectedly modify the fill color of the selected object instead of the stroke color.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Adobe Illustrator 2025 and ensure the Essentials Classic Workspace is active.
2. Create a shape (e.g., rectangle) with a distinct stroke and fill color.
3. Select the shape and ensure the stroke is active for editing (click the Stroke thumbnail in the top bar).
4. Shift+Click the Stroke Color thumbnail to launch the improved color mixer.
5. Adjust the color using the mixer controls.Expected Result:
The stroke color of the selected object should update based on the adjustments made in the color mixer.Actual Result:
The fill color of the selected object updates instead, while the stroke color remains unchanged.Suggested Priority:
High – This issue affects a fundamental color adjustment workflow, which is a core feature of Illustrator for design tasks.Application Version: Adobe Illustrator 2025, macOS Sequoia

Fill is changed when asking for line color change. And vice versa.
This week I used Illustrator 29.1 in English (Mac). And it was so annoying: I select an object, and I want to change the line color. To do this I used the Control-panel in the top: I choose a different LINE color, but the FILL color changes instead! This depends on whether the fill color in the tools panel was active or the linecolor was active (in front of the other). When the line color was active, and I wanted to change the fill color through the ControlPanel, the line color changed. Aaaaargh!!!

I have the same issues, stroke and fill colors picking doesn't work properly. I thought I was losing my mind.
Also, shift clicking the swatch doesn't work as before coming up as blank and when clicking on a color instead of adding a fill color it adds a stroke color.

The control bar fill and stroke options are only changing the color that is active on the vertical toolbar not per the control fill or stroke options. On the control bar on the left is the fill swatch and on the right is the stroke swatch. When I try to change the color from the control bar it is not changing per the left fill swatch or the right stroke swatch but instead it is changing per what is active in the vertical toolbar. If the fill color is active in the vertical toolbar and I select the stroke color from the control bar it changes the fill color instead of the stroke color. If the stroke color is active in the toolbar and I select the fill color from the control bar it changes the stroke color instead of the fill color. Does this help you all understand that it does not work and you still have not fixed it.

Hi there is a new bug in the 29.0.1 version.
If you select an object and then change the stroke color of an object in the left upper corner then in result this action changes the fill color not the stroke color.
It seems to be connected with the order of the fill and stroke on the left tool bar. If the Fill is above the stroke in the left tool bar then changes in the upper corner affect the fill and when the stroke is above the fill in the left toolbar then the change affect the stroke.

The focus on the fill or stroke in the Tools panel determine what color can be changed in the Control panel..

@Egor -- the colour mixers in the control bar appear to change whatever the active appearance is (stroke or fill), regardless of whether the drop-down for stroke or fill is selected.

29.0.1 Mac OS confirmed. What is the use of beta, pre-release, where is QA? If in the final release you roll out such stupid bugs.

Yes, that is correct. Thank you..

Yasin, from what I see in the GIF (and what I can verify), using the Color Mixer in Control panel for stroke changes the color of the fill instead — am I correct? I fixed the title.
