Font changes from the current one to the previously used while typing
I'm working on a document in which I used Avenir font, but for the most I use Myriad Pro. When I click with the Type tool I see in the character box I'm with the default font (Myriad Pro) and start typing. Then noticed I'm now in Avenir font!
This bug is brand new with the latest update (29.1), I didn't add any issue of that type before.
I'm on Windows 11 PC Core i7-13700 32 Go of RAM
This issue has been fixed in 29.2 release. Please update your Illustrator to latest version through Creative Cloud Desktop.

Fixing it in Beta only, is not a fix. Please roll out a patch to the regular version as well. I do not want to have to download and use the beta version for Illustrator to work properly.

All - you need to have latest Illustrator (Beta) app installed from Beta Apps section in Creative Cloud Desktop to try the fix done.

Anytime I change the selected font in a previously used type box and then click back into it afterward, the newly typed text reverts to the originally used font, regardless of the placement of the cursor.

Coworker and I are having the same exact font and character style issue. It is driving us nuts that the fonts are not working correctly.
Hopefully they get this fixed asap.

Character style fonts dont save correctly anymore, fonts change now when you copy a text label and start typing. Where previous illustrator versions did not have the issue and the font stayed the same.

Another update: I have been able to reproduce this behaviour in new documents with no objects copied over from the original document, and none of the same fonts used. This behaviour only seems to affect text objects created after the document has been saved, closed, and reopened.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document.
2. Add a text object (#1) and type something. Select the entire type object and change the font.
3. Add another text object (#2) and type something else. Select the entire type object and change the font (to a different font than #1).
4. Save and close the document.
5. Reopen the document.
6. Add another text object (#3) and type something. (This text object should have the default Myriad Pro font.)
7. Add another text object (#4) and type something else. With this text object selected, use the eyedropper tool on one of the original text objects, to transfer over the type style.
8. Change the font of each of the text objects to a completely different font that hasn't been used in the document yet. Use a different font for each.
9. Type something new in each of the text objects. #1, #2 and #4 will revert to their original fonts, while #3 retains the changed font.It looks like any font styles that were created before the document was first saved and closed, and any font styles created after the document was reopened but before the default text style for new text objects was changed by the act of using the eyedropper tool, are somehow "contaminated" — any text set to any of these styles will revert to it as soon as new text is added, even if the text style has been changed since then.

Update with some more details: I created a new document and copied/pasted some text from my original document into it (both whole text objects and individual bits of text).
Unlike my original document, text objects created in this new document don't revert to their original font after changing the font and editing the text. However, the buggy behaviour from the original document appears to be "contagious": any text from the original document still reverts to the original font when edited, whether it's a whole text object copied/pasted over or individual characters pasted into text objects created in the new document.

Operating system: macOS Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348)
Version: Illustrator 2025 29.1I created text objects and set them to a specific font. Later, I changed them all to a different font. Now, whenever I add text to one of these text objects or create a new text object with the new font set in the Character palette, it reverts to the original font, no matter how many times I change the font.

For me the issue still persists.
Once I reactivated "Enable missing glyph protection" the same thing started happening as reported. CCD shows Illustrator was updated this morning, so I'm under the impression I'm using the newest build.
Thank you,

It would appear that with the Ai (beta) it is back to functional as expected.

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. I'm glad Adobe is aware. Thanks.

Please Adobe, write either in the patch note or here when an update to Illustrator will correct this bug. I'm still on the previous version as I cannot afford the hasle with my workload.

Thank you, just tried and text behaves normally. Not sure if disabling this feature will become an issue in other ways, but I trust your people are working on a permanent fix.
Thanks again for the workaround.

When I select a text box and change the font, I double-click to enter the text box to continue typing in the new font, BUT... it does not type in the newly-selected font. It switches back to the previously selected font. I do not know how this happens and I cannot figure out if I did something to make it do this.
Have no way of taking a screen video of this occurence.

Also having this issue. Completely wiped illustrator then reinstalled and it worked for a few files then the issue started again. mine happens with text boxes from elements in my library's, I have always had "missing glyph protection " on and this was not an issue last week and nothing has been updated since.

Hi there,
In V. 29.1 if I open a previously created document and I change the font of a text element, a problem occurs when I go to edit the text.As you see in the screenshot, when I try to edit the text, the font of the newly typed text changes to the originally used font.
Insanely time consuming to make text changes or corrections as a result.

It's a relief that turning off "Missing Glyph Protection" fixed this for now but this was driving me crazy and I hope it gets fixed soon.
