At least I know I'm not alone on this gradient issue, I have to waste so much time on removing a gradient if I want a solid!

Every year Illustrator stays the same or gets worse, while photoshop just gets easier and better to use, if only Photoshop was a vector program!
-Still no history panel in Illustrator, despite it being near the most requested feature, you gotta CMD/CTR + Z multiple times just to fix or find where you made a minor mistake.
-Still no custom naming conventions for exporting files, it adds "asset" to the exported file names.
-Can't create new files from layers or groups, gotta select everything and create a file, instead of just creating an artboard from by the file dimensions copied.

I could go on, there are so many features other Adobe programs have that would be ideal for Illustrator, but their development team doesn't seem too interested in making Illustrator a part of Creative Suite with seamless integrations, but rather just a program packaged with Creative Suite

Really? I can't NOT have a gradient on an object once it has one? The gradient is permanent and cannot be removed? It just remains even though it's supposedly not there?

Ridiculous. Every year is worse and worse, and I'm not just talking about the products. This company needs to die already.

Figured out how to switch from gradient to solid color. So when you have a gradient on a object, up in the color dialog box you will see the gradient in the fill box. In the gradient box when you want to change the color on a node, you make the change by selecting the node. Up in the color box the fill box will now stay as the node color. The only way to go back so that the gradient shows in the fill box is to click the little "circle" right underneath the fill box. This will return you to the gradient.

This was a pain not knowing how to do at first because sometimes i want to remove the gradient and place a solid color fill. Now with this step its easy to go back and forth between gradient node and object fill.

I can’t recall at the moment how I got over it. Usually on to making another gradient anyway. So just pick the new colors.
Hard to imagine how they make it all work as well as it does. Got to be a really complicated process.
They certainly make a lot of us look smarter than we probably are.

yeah it isn't fixed and the updates are loading from the cloud now - so there's no excuse - really sucks something so basic is unexplainably screwed by the biggest piece of design software on Planet Earth - oh, and hey, if you've got a day off to kill, try calling Adobe Support sometime. Lord. Yeah, Apple users you are in the penalty box - because design that's why.

I ended up selecting the object, and going to the colour panel in the lefthand side toolbar and picking a solid colour there. But it's very fiddly! Not great

I am struggling with this too. I finally selected all the parts of my design and hit Unite in pathfinder and that made a solid color.

I am now having this same problem. Once I have added a gradient to an object, the same gradient is then automatically applied to every new object within the document. There is no obvious way to remove the gradient and use just a solid colour. I just installed 2019 CC and this is very confusing :(

SOLUTION: When your gradient slider remains selected, you should go to the COLOR panel and click on the color square to " Gradient Stop Color". So then you will return to the normal plain color selection.

I am having the same issue and I have the most current version of Illustrator (23.0.03). This just started occurring with the most recent update for me. I have been searching to find a way around this and haven't been able to find one. Once I use a gradient fill , I cannot deselect the gradient sliders to change the color to a solid. Any new shape i draw is given the same gradient fill automatically.

are we going to get paid for being beta tester ??

This bug makes me want to use a different program. It's killing my work flow.

In Illustrator 2019 there’s a glitch that causes a gradient to apply to an unselected object. It seems to happen to the most recently selected object. If I'm zoomed in and apply a gradient to an object on one area of the artboard and it changes the color of an object on a totally different area, I might not see it happen and could send an incorrect file to print. I’ve hit undo and tried again, but it happens over and over.

While possibly related, that was not my specific issue.
I'll wait for the next release version and see if my problem was addressed as well.
To recap, the problem I experienced was that Illustrator CC 2019 was adding colors to linear gradients in shapes that were NOT selected. When adding a color to a shape filled with a gradient, Illustrator CC 2019 would add that additional color to a previously created, non selected gradient.

I'm having this problem too, but my issues started with Adobe Illustrator CC 2019. Running on a Mac OSX Mojave. I've found that clicking on the relevant one of the three boxes that select gradation type (linear, radial, freeform) in the pallet it works properly. And still allows to add/modify the previous created gradation in the pallet but no effect previous gradated objects that aren't selected. Weird that gradations on objects that aren't selected at all change their colors.
