Hi! I started having this issue yesterday.
I tried a reinstall, update, several roll backs, uninstalling all cloud apps, creative cloud wipe, turning off iCloud, font cache clearing.
I got Illustrator to save without crashing by disconnecting from the internet.
Hope this helps someone.
Best regards,

This is what I was told and it worked for my client.
Hi Gavin,
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Can you please check if the user is logged into iCloud under System preferences?
If yes, then Sign out from iCloud and check if illustrator works fine. Once you are sure Ai is working fine, please sign back in iCloud.

This problem happens mainly with my Macbook Pro 2017 running High Sierra 10.13.6. The 2013 Macbook Pro on High Sierra 10.13.1 runs Illustrator just fine, but this really shouldn't be a problem to begin with. What the **** am I supposed to do? Downgrade?

I've been getting the spinning wheel every time i try to open or save a file on my 2018 Macbook Pro. This is frustrating beyond belief. The file eventually opens or saves, but this is after 15 to 20 mins. I've reinstalled CC, Illustrator, restarted my computer 5 times. This sucks. How do I resolve this?!

A solution for me that worked well (knock knock, let's not jinx it) was first to save an empty page "as a copy" then save that same page normally "save as". After "saving as a copy" it somehow saves everything works fine. I could add images etc and it went well to save the file
I was very desperate because have a deadline tomorrow. Adobe you should really fix this bug! -

Many of my projects had this issue when saving. I have found that this problem doesn't occur if I delete all vector fonts in use.

I just kind of solved my problem by checking if there is something using the internet significantly. Since I just purchase my new macbook pro. There are so many files need to pull from iCloud. I just found my iCloud Drive is downloading large number of files. I try to turn it off. And illustrator is working. Hope this help for you guys...

I'm still having issues... Every time I try to open a file from finder in illustrator it freezes and then I have to force quit. I have to force quit when I try to save a file too because it freezes.

I switched off my internet and then I could save things. God knows what that means but it's working. Swithced it back on and I can save the file as I'm working. Weird.

I'm having same problem. Illustrator freezes (spinning wheel) when saving. Can't open existing file either. Reinstalled, changes prefs, tried a 'clean install' nothing is working.

I will soon have to stop using Illustrator – I have downloaded the latest update -- 22.1 -- and STILL CANNOT SAVE ANY FILES. I'm on a MacBook Pro on 10.13.6, and have no problems with any other Adobe product. This is completely absurd and unacceptable for a company like Adobe. I had this problem periodically with Illustrator CC 2017, but now it is an unsolvable and permanent bug. Being forced to review purchasing some sort of Illustrator alternative today, or trying to move to just Photoshop.. Cannot deal with this shoddy application anymore.

@YD
the crash stack as submitted to us 7 months ago has been fixed and confirmed by people who submitted it. Your issue most likely is unrelated to it.
Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels - https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . We will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here. -

This is not corrected. It still crashes with the latest Mac OS Sierra 10.13.6.
It just stuck with 100.8 CPU.

The issue has not been resolved as of yet. The software still crashes whenever I save my files.
