Pinpointed the problem to gradient slider colors staying selected. (duplicated on both Mac & Windows)

If you add a new color to the gradient slider manually, and then pull down on it to remove it, it will clear the selection.

Ensuring that you manually add a color to the gradient slider and then remove it by pulling down on it before you select you next shape seems to be a way around this bug.

When a shape is selected, and you pull a color from the swatches window to the gradient window, to make a gradient for the current shape, the previous shape selected (before this shape) reflects changes that you do on your new shape.

For instance: You draw shape A, make a gradient set as Red-Blue on that shape. You now make shape B, and since the gradient window still displays your last gradient (Red-Blue) you drag green down from the swatches to the blue marker in the gradient window to make Red-Green. Now shape A is Red-Green as well.

Locking the affected layer does not solve this.

Yes, I'm finding the same thing as well - editing a new gradient alters the previous gradient that I used, even when objects are no longer selected and not grouped. Every single time!! Very frustrating!

Rick — it isn't just linear gradients either. I have had it happen to radial gradients within the same file I was working yesterday. I have tried to reproduce the issue in a more controlled way (ie, trying to reproduce all the factors I could think of) but couldn't get it to happen. There's for sure a bug, but I'm not sure how to pass on more complete info to the engineers yet so they can see it on their end.

Thanks for the install info; I am always hesitant to install previous versions (probably just idiosyncratic) but I might in this case.

You isolated the specific issue better than I did.
I was hoping the latest update would fix this, but no such luck.
For what it's worth, reinstalling a previous version is pretty easy.
From the Creative Cloud application (via the Finder menu), just click the down arrow next to the "Open" button for Adobe Illustrator, and choose "Manage", then "Other versions".
You'll get a pop-up list of previous versions you can click on to install.

I have been having the same problem. I am tempted to go back to the previous version too, but won't because I simply don't have the time to go through the process. But if it helps the Adobe engineers (if they ever see this post!) I am working on a document with a sizable number of gradients (20 to 30). I wish I could find any other common denominators here. But it seems like Illustrator is only grabbing other objects that have the EXACT same gradient fill (like as if I was to do "Select > Same Fill Color") and edits those specific ones. (Even though those other shapes with gradient fills are not selected).

Same issue here. Dragging the new color on the gradient bar affects every object with that gradient, even though they're not selected (probably, some bug with new group editing feature)

Select an object with flat colour. Drag that colour in to the gradient bar and it used to fill the object with a new gradient. Now instead of applying that gradient to the selected object, it alters the previous gradient swatch even when that swatch is no longer highlighted and messes up any object that's using it. So frustrating!

As you can see in the attached video, the gradient tool changes a completely different graphic with a gradient applied to it, when I try to apply a gradient to another shape. Makes no sense. When restarting Illustrator, it behaves normally again. Must be a bug...

I reverted back to the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CC 2018.
At least Adobe lets you install a previous version.
Still surprised this shipped like this. I'd like to check out the new features in the latest version, but this bug was killing my productivity.

I'm also having this problem, its messed up quite a bit of work!

Illustrator CC 2019 is adding colors to linear gradients on paths that are not selected. When adding a color to a path filled with a gradient, Illustrator CC 2019 often adds that additional color to a previously created, non selected gradient.
This is with Mac OSX 10.13.6 on a mid 2011 iMac.
