Could not read file because the plug in did not understand this file
Not sure what is happening. I was able to open files before but now I receive a message
Document recovery is now built inside Illustrator to recover incomplete/corrupt documents. Illustrator first tries to fix and open the native Illustrator document, if that fails then the PDF part of the document is recovered if it is available. Illustrator shows message to the user if any of the above attempts fails to recover the document.

There is no solution other than taking a screenshot of the photo and then open it.
I hope it works for all. -

No fix from Adobe.
As a workaround on mac is to open in Preview then save as PDF and this file opens in Adobe Illustrator.
I hope that helps.

Was able to open problem files using AI rev 24 in a different computer using AI rev 22. Then I have to go and delete the linked empty image boxes and resave new name. Then I'm able to open unless I missed a linked/placed image. Crazy.

Since updating to Mac iOS Catalina 10.15.1 and Illustrator 24.0, I continue to be unable to access most (but not all) of my old .ai files. I've tried uninstalling Illustrator 24.0 and reinstalling the prior version to no avail. Problem persists. Illustrator Error message is "Could not read the file became the plug-in could not read this file." I cannot begin to tell you how upsetting/frustrating this problem is. It is having a major impact on my business. Clearly I am not the only one with this problem...Surely there is a fix for this. Please advise!

Getting this error for the first time and I suspect it's related to the new 2020 update. It's holding up work and I need this resolved asap. I've tried suggestions mentioned in this page with no luck.

I am also experiencing the same issue. No plug-ins. I tried the suggested moving the file to a different location and it still wouldn't open. I called Adobe Support and they were no help. They even said no one else had experienced this issue so they didn't have any previous knowledge to draw from.

I'm having the problem with a file I saved the other day. All I need is to fix one number to deliver, and the client is about to go nuts when I tell him I can't open the file and have to start all [bleeping] over! Why is there no fix for this?!

The only thing I did was update to the the next version. I have been thinking a patch would drop any day. I can not open loads of old client files. Anybody have a clue? Id think there would be thousands of complaints though...!?

We have the same message.
In-fact all the adobe products are going haywire all of a sudden.
Photoshop is having trouble opening any file. After Effects cannot open files properly - giving missing file messages. -

Yep, had the same problem. What a useless error message. I don't have any plugins in AI.
