1. Set Custom Scale based on artwork for Engineering Plans Measurements

   I need to add measurements for lighting layouts, outlets, smoke detectors and fans on electric plans. The current measurement tool has a custom option but it's difficult to figure out the scale when it's 1:98 or 1:49. Trial and error gets frustrating and it's not always 100% correct.

   **I need a way I could calibrate a custom scale like in CAD/Bluebeam. So, clicking two points and telling Illustrator that space between equals 4ft so it sets the scale for me. This would be more efficient. **

3. Custom layer colors, layer 5 yellow is killing me

   Can i please change the default layer colors so that layer 5 is not always yellow? I set up files all day long and yellow on white is ******* the eyes, would love to be able to set a default layer color for the first 5 or six new layers. Thank you.

   Illustrator removed yellow color for Layer 5 in 24.1.1, but never allowed to customize colors fully. Therefore a new request now exists, 'Allow to set custom default layer colors, with options': http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/48605225

   Please upvote it if you think you need to be able to have customized default colors for layers. All those who commented here on anything else but yellow got automatically added as voters.

4. Spring Loaded tools

   Over in Photoshop, it's possible to hold the single-letter shortcut for activating a tool, and to then release the key to return to your previously-used tool.

   In many ways, this is not useful in Illustrator, but in several, it's invaluable. The Zoom tool, in particular--I'd like to be able to hold Z, adjust the zoom, and release Z to be back on the selection tool (or whatever i was previously using).

   The Hand tool already works this way: Take out a tool like Selection (v), and then hold spacebar to get the Hand tool. Drag the canvas around, then release Space to return to using the selection tool.

   This "spring loaded" behavior is great in the hand tool and could be similarly useful in the following tools, where a quick "adjustment" with the mouse would naturally be made while the tool key is held.
   Zoom
   Eyedropper
   Paintbrush/Pencil
   Eraser
   Shape Builder
   Direct Selection

   Additionally, these functions would benefit, but are not single-key shortcuts by default:
   Width tool
   Rotate, Scale, Shear
   Blob Bush
   Bloat, Pucker, Warp, Twirl, Scallop, Crystalize, Wrinkle

   There may, of course, be others, but these are the main ones I can think of that do not rely on a modal settings box or panel to do their work, and which primarily involve visual adjustments by clicking and dragging with the mouse and without (usually) needing modifier keys. As such, each would benefit greatly from being "spring loaded."

   (Symbol Sprayer and its variants might also benefit, but generally require modifier keys)

6. Allow to set custom default layer colors, with options

   We need an ability to set up our own order for these colors.

   We need to be able to store these as presets, so we can switch these.

   We need a way to make a certain order preferred in a template or a document profile.

   We need an ability to remap current colors for layers to any other chosen preset order, top deal with imported files.

   We need an ability to lock a certain color as a constant default ones, for those who need a single edge color, but many layers.

   We need a way to ask Illustrator to automatically pick a color based on the layer’s content, to contrast nicely with the art within.

   We need a dynamic 'difference' color, so that an edge could pop no matter the content (except for grays, sadly).

   We need an ability to pick these color no only using ugly OS picker, but our own swatches.

7. Circle-tool — subdivision functionality with arrow keys

   As the "Effect > Stylize > Round Edges..." is a little bit flawed if working with short sections and third-party-scripts often show the same problem that short sections rounded often are not a circular section but some weird hyberbole of sorts I often use Circles and subdivisions of those as a stand-in if I need a round corner with a fixed radius. Up to now i have to manually draw a line from the center, rotate it by the angle I want and subdivide it with the knife.
   If circles could behave a bit like the polygon tool and its arrow-key functionality to add more or less anchorpoints that make up the circle instead of the default 4 that would be awesome.

8. Mark starting points and directions for paths

   We know nothing about where a closed path starts and which direction it has.
   We can cheat it and apply an arrowhead or a brush to see that, but perhaps you just should mark the first points of paths with something else than a square? Like a triangle?
   Come on, look at Corel Draw, look at Affinity Designer!

9. Add dividers/separators to custom tools panel (or enable stacking/docking them vertically)

   It would be nice to be able to visually separate tool groups in custom toolbars since there is no way to stack them vertically. Think "groups" in Microsoft Office apps' "ribbon". We can currently only...

   A) Mash all of our tools into one toolbar, with no means of visual organization apart from the order in which they appear (I don't count stacking the tools as "visual organization", since I cannot see them).

   B) Snap multiple toolbars together, but not while docked to edge of UI. They will not be movable together like this, and other UI elements can overlap them. Far from ideal.

   C) Dock the toolbars together horizontally. This is a massively inefficient use of screen space.

   P.S.: This is more of a peeve than anything, why do toolbars occupy all vertical space even when there are no tools there? We're going back to smaller screens now, with touch interfaces, so being able to utilize screen real estate is crucial.

   Actually, someone submitted a request for this already titled "Unable to Resize Tool Panels (verticle axis)". It started to receive votes and the mods (groan) closed it since it was worded sort of like a bug report, and mistaken for one. Sorry, but this is why you don't outsource your online presence to non-native-English-speakers. It makes you a punchline.:

10. Preference for keyboard increments in NUMERICAL value boxes

    I love being able to use the up/down keys to change the values of the numerical values in panels and dialog boxes such as OFFSET PATH.

    The problem is that the incremental jumps are to far (1/8 of an inch when set to inches). We can use modifier keys to increase or decrease this jump, BUT it is still big jumps.

    I can find no other way to adjust this other than moving to Points or pixels for the measuring through right clicking the ruler, even though I am working in inches. This moves the increment to those base values: in Point, the keyboard increment jump is 1 point and the Command modifier drops it to .1 increments.

    I would love a way to adjust this. for example in inches, I would love to set the numerical incremental jump to 1/64 and still use the modifiers when using the up and down arrow keys.

13. Release to Layers should inherit custom names from original objects

    When I Release to Layers, all of the objects within that layer are renamed to "Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3" etc. and I'd love to be able to have the new layers be named the same as when they were objects.

14. Updating artboard dropdown to include social media and saving custom artboards

    The current artboards dropdown menu hasn't been changed in years. It should include social media and trending medium sizes. We should also have the ability to save artboard sizes that are custom to our needs. Just add a "Save artboard" in the dropdown or tool workspace. The current method of saving a template and then having to search, open and then resave the template takes too long and requires too many steps.

    Corel has had this feature for ever. Need to increase productivity by recording actions and applying quick keys to it. But we need to record extensions, and scripts that we run.

17. Customize page sizes and templates on Home screen

    On the new Home screen in Illustrator 23, there does not appear to be any way to customize the list of page sizes that appear in the "Create a new file" section (as shown in the attached screenshot), at least as far as I can tell.

    Three of the sizes shown in this list (A4, Postcard, iPhone X) are ones that I rarely work in, and would be willing to select them from the Custom option when needed. On the other hand, I do frequently work in US letter and statement sizes, but there doesn't seem to be any way to create those in a single click from this screen; the only way to create documents in these sizes is to click Custom and select them manually from the full list.

    On the new Home screen in Illustrator 23, there does not appear to be any way to customize the list of page sizes that appear in the "Create a new file" section (as shown in the attached screenshot), at least as far as I can tell.

18. Way to change "Custom" Document name

    Would love to be able to change this "Custom" name to something more descriptive. I have a few piece of equipment that I would like to be able to select quickly. For now I have to go through the hassle of templates which works well but is several other clicks. Would be nice to have a way to quickly create documents for those specific equipment types with preconfigured settings.

19. Colour Book/Pantone Swatches to remain in Custom Workspaces

    Swatch libraries can be made persistent via their panel’s menu. Look into comments for details.

20. Gradient “easing” / bezier curve control for color stops

    Any work that utilizes gradients in Illustrator would benefit greatly from the addition of the ability to manually control/adjust the bezier curves of the gradients’ color stops.

    Ultimately, this level of control allows for significantly more pleasing and subtle gradients. Relying on midpoints to adjust gradients ultimately results in very obviously visual “steps” from one color stop to the next.

    I’ve attached a video demonstrating the easing function, as well as a before and after image to illustrate its effect.
