Auto-update of linked images broken in Illustrator 2025 (works in 2024)
have encountered an issue with Illustrator 2025(~29.7.1) on macOS 15.6.1.
When I edit and save a linked PSD file in Photoshop, Illustrator 2025 does not auto-update the linked image immediately when switching back from Photoshop.
• In Illustrator 2024, this works perfectly: saving in Photoshop → switching to Illustrator → the link updates instantly.
• In Illustrator 2025, the update does not happen unless I first switch to another app or Finder, then return to Illustrator.
• I confirmed this behavior on multiple Macs, both before and after updating macOS.
• Preferences “Update Links Automatically” and “Check Links Before Opening Document” are enabled. It seems Illustrator 2025(~29.7.1) is not detecting the file system change event when switching directly from Photoshop.
Could you please confirm if this is a known bug, and if a fix is planned in a future update?have encountered an issue with Illustrator 2025(~29.7.1) on macOS 15.6.1.

The Default File Location option in missing in Preferences > File Handling
Whenever we install Illustrator anew and try to save a document for the first time, we are given a choice — to save into Cloud or save locally. The default choices is Cloud and 'Don’t show again is checked) — Adobe actively wants users to use their system, I get it. However, if one makes a mistake and wants to alter this choice later — they can’t do it anymore.
At some point we had this option exposed in Preferences > File Handling, but later it started to randomly disappear for users, with the same build used. The support can offer nothing but to reset Preferences, but it never helps to make it appear back. The blank spot is there, but the option is gone.
We, however, can toggle it with a script, with a single line:
app.preferences.setBooleanPreference ("AdobeSaveAsCloudDocumentPreference",false);or go to the 'Adobe Illustrator Prefs' file and set this key to zero:
/AdobeSaveAsCloudDocumentPreference 0So the option exists, it just doesn’t get exposed.
I personally think it’s a trap. I think Adobe lures users to use the Cloud. I think this perfectly fits the 'Adobe uses shady practices' and whatever the team can say in response (except for 'It is now fixed' with the users proving it is) I will treat as fueling these practices. Here’s a discussion at forums about this:

Cannot move images in my design.
I'm not able to move images in my design. If I click image trace and make the image into a vector then I can move it, but as soon as I rasterize it back into an image then I can no longer move it. I also am not able to click to select the image, I have to drag a box around it to select the image.
Things I've tried:
- Checked for update
- Restarted my computer
- Restarted Illy
- Restarted Illy while pressing shift-options-command
- moved the file to my desktop (off of external drive)
- cleared storage, incase my scratch disk was getting fullNone of these have helped.

Many issues in Illustrator 2025
Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a range of serious issues in Illustrator 2025 when working with AI or PDF files (many of which originate as PDFs and are then converted to AI for editing). Here's a breakdown of what's going wrong:⚠️ Main Problems:
Error ID: -128 when pasting text
Every time I try to paste text into a text box—whether copied from a browser, a PDF, or even another Illustrator file—I get an error saying:
Can't paste the type. ID: -128
This makes it impossible to replace or update any existing text areas. Can't move objects: transformation too large
When trying to move a single element, I get an error:
Can't move the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects too large.
No idea why this happens—nothing is grouped, and I’ve checked that all layers are unlocked.Dragging text boxes stretches the text instead of resizing the box
When I try to expand a text area, Illustrator stretches the text itself rather than increasing the box size. It seems like all text is stuck in Point Type mode, and switching it to Area Type doesn’t always work.Selection issues and erratic grouping
Some objects can't be selected at all unless I use Outline mode.
Clicking one object sometimes causes all nearby objects to move.
Even though I haven't grouped anything, Illustrator treats random sets of objects as if they're linked.
Save and export often fail or hang
Saving the document often gets stuck or results in a corrupt file.
Exporting as PDF, PNG, or SVG occasionally fails without an error or freezes Illustrator entirely.
🧪 What I’ve tried:
Clean reinstall of Illustrator 2025
Resetting preferences
Unlocking all objects and layers
Copying elements into a new document
Using older file formats (e.g., Illustrator 2020)
Saving as SVG and reimporting

When a justified area type with a short line gets converted into a point type, text shifts
Why this justified text suddenly jumps into the middle of the area type’s bounds when converted into a point type? Not new at all, happens in CC2017 at least. It should stay where it was. If I change it to be just left-aligned, it works as expected.

Saving Process
I recently updated my Illustrator, and I've encountered a new error. When I try to save my project, the saving process won't complete, and there are no options to cancel it. Also, it is not shown on the tasks panel. I have to open a new document and save that as a new file. After a few rounds of saving, the problem occurs again, and I have to force stop the app to prevent further issues with recovered documents.
I would greatly appreciate your help in solving this problem. Thank you.

The font with a name which has ampersand symbol cause wrong with exported SVG file
If there is an ampersand in the name of the inserted font, the exported svg file is not able to open due to not escaped symbol&. In fact it should be escaped into &, otherwise error named EntityRef will appear. After editing the SVG file manually, everything goes well.
For example, a font with the family name "FontA&B" is inserted in a file. When I export, the svg file show "font-family: FontA&B" instead of "font-family: FontA&B" or "font-family: "FontA&B" ". So the bug might be tricky. Hope it can be fixed. This does affect my work.

Illustrator uses 100% CPU, sustained, even when idle and no documents open
I've observed many times that when Illustrator (29.7.1, on macOS 15.6) is idle in the background, it's running a 100% CPU task. Even if I close all of its open documents, the CPU use is at 100% CPU, and stays there until I quit.

"Learn the tools" popups appearing on their own
The Learn popups for the tools on the tool bar keep appearing on their own whenever I am in the application. I have to wipe my mouse over them for them to disappear, just for them to keep popping up when I am using Illustrator. This continues to happen the entire time I am in the application.

Duplicating Artboard will unlock and show locked and hidden elements.
When using the Artboard Tool and clicking on a + sign next to an artboard while holding the Alt/Option key to duplicate an artboard with its contents, Illustrator will Show and Unlock all hidden and locked objects/layers.
It does this only the first time, when using Undo and trying again it works correct.
See: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/why-does-illustrator-switch-hidden-layers-back-on-and-unlock-them-when-duplicating-an-art-board/m-p/15455446#M4498383 votesThe fix is pushed into the latest Prerelease build and is scheduled to get shipped into the next general build

Can't select linked png/bmp files when they have transparent backgrounds.
Placing several linked BMP or PNG files with transparent backgrounds causes them to become randomly unselectable by clicking on them. You have to go to outline mode, find and select the edge of the image, or select with marquee tool and then carefully unselect the extra objects. Either way, it cannot be moved except to click on the edge of the images frame. This has been an issue for years. I think I may have even posted about it before, but can't find that now. IMO this is an issue that should be escalated as it such a basic operation that is broken. See the video below. This has been replicated by many others.

Enclosed Mode toggle button in Control and CTB
Illustrator now has a dedicated option to permanently toggle Enclosed Selection Mode, in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display > Select Objects only within Marquee.
However, there’s no hotkey we can assign to this option (or any other option in Preferences!) or a button outside or Prefs — in Control panel or Contextual Task Bar... Properties I don’t mention, since it’d certainly want me to have nothing selected.Originally by Derek Watson.

Export for Screens won’t export artboards as a single file
When a document has multiple artboards and is exported as PDF using Export for Screens, although all artboards are selected and a Single File option is checked, it will still be exported as multiple files.

Copying (Ctrl+C) a Radial repeated object with a drop shadow causes crash
Illustrator 29.61
I was able to re-create the crash with the following steps:
Create New Document.
Create 5 basic shapes, group them.
From the application menu, go to Object->Repeat->Radial and apply it to the group.
Double click on the original group to isolate it, from the appearance panel add a fx drop shadow to the grouped object.
Exit isolation.
select the repeated group and copy it
Crash.Playing around with this, the crash only occurs when you add the drop shadow after applying the radial repeat. The easy solution is to apply the drop shadow prior to applying the repeat.
I did not test other fx options.

Cursor stays invisible after exiting Presentation mode
How to reproduce:
Create a multiple artboard document.
Enter presentation mode.
Do not move the mouse.
Use the left and right arrow keys to view all the art boards.
Note that windows will make the mouse cursor invisible since you are not using it.
Press ESC to return to normal viewing/editing mode.
Now the mouse cursor is invisible.Work around: If you go back to presentation mode and wiggle the mouse and press ESC while the mouse is visible then the mouse will be visible in normal screen mode.

Brushes become a lighter tint of black in an RGB document when expanded or rasterized.
Brushes like Art Brushes are based on a CMYK document. They were created with C0 M0 Y0 K100.
When these brushes are used in an RGB document with an RGB black (0/0/0) for the stroke, the result will be around a lighter 10% black than expected because the CMYK black will be converted to RGB.
You can check that by expanding, rasterizing or Output Preview in Acrobat.
If they had been created in the CMYK document with a 100% Grey instead of CMYK values, they would have converted to the darkest black in an RGB documents (greyscale always keep their values when converted between RGB and CMYK documents).Brushes like Art Brushes are based on a CMYK document.
