1. Paragraph Styles in Illustrator are Hot Garbage

2. Illustrator pulls clippings masks to the top of their clip groups when a document is reopened

   1. Make a simple clipping group
   2. Select clipping path only
   3. Fill it
   4. Send it to back
   5. Save and close the file
   6. Open the file back Illustrator will move the clipping mask back to the top of the group.

   Why this is important?
   1. Because if we release a clipping group that has the filled clipping path below clipped object, it stays below.
   2. Because when we use isolation mode, Illustrator will allow to select children only when the filled clipping mask is below the clipped objects.

   Take a look at the GIF attached, that shows three methods possible with colored clippings masks.

   1. Magenta one. This is what Draw Inside makes. As mentioned in the video, we can’t click the filled background to select the clipping group. We can isolate it by clicking the black circle and select the child, but not the clipping path.

   2. Cyan one. This is a magic trick I use to force Ai to do what it should. If you use compound path as a clipping path, we CAN click and move the group. However, when we isolate, the compound clipping path prevents us from selecting children.

   3. Green one. If me put the compound clipping path below children, we can select both the background and children as expected. This is how is should work, no matter if the clipping path is compound or if it’s below or not. This is the only one of three that keeps the background below children when clipping groups are released.

   Alas, there are several problems with the variant 3.

   1. It requires manually creating a compound path.

   2. It requires manually putting it below.

   3. It won’t be treated properly with Crop command in Pathfinder (you’d have to Flatten Transparency first).

   4. This exact report — Illustrator will put it back on top when we close and reopen the file.

   This problem is one of many that prevents us to embracing colored clipping masks and use workaround like separate backgrounds.

   1. Make a simple clipping group
   2. Select clipping path only
   3. Fill it
   4. Send it to back
   5. Save and close the file

4. Scaling proportionally not working with Use Preview Bounds enabled

   Very weird issue happening at the moment. I was working on a file and realized some things which were supposed to be proportionate were not. I double checked and actually Illustrator was not scaling things proportionally!
   Video to show what happens.

   So far I've uninstalled Illustrator and re-installed it. Seems like keeping Preview Bounds off is the only thing that works. If you got any ideas please let me know :)

5. レイヤー名に改行コードが入っている場合、MacとWindowsでレイヤーパネルの表記が異なる。

   macOS Ventura 13.6.3、Windows10／11
   Illustrator ver.28.2（以前のバージョンも同様の挙動）

   1.テキストエディタ等から改行を含むテキストをコピーする。
   2.Illustratorに移り、新規ドキュメントを開きレイヤーパネルを選択する。
   3.レイヤー 1を選択しレイヤー名をダブルクリックするかダイアログを表示してレイヤー名にテキストエディター等でコピーした改行を含むテキストをペーストする。
   4.Macでは改行がZWNBSのように扱われ表示されます。Windowsでは改行として扱われ改行以後が折り返され上部だけがかすかに見えます。

   期待する結果
   プラットフォームが違ってもレイヤー名の表示がおなじになる。

   実際の結果
   MacとWindowsでレイヤー名の表示が異なる。

   これはレイヤー名に改行コードが入ってしまうという特殊なケースでの挙動の違いです。しかし、レイヤー名をテキストエディタ等からコピーしてきてペーストするというシナリオは考えられることです。プラットフォームの違いで表示が異なるのは問題です。
   理想を言えば、レイヤー名に改行が混ざっていた場合は改行コード自体をドロップしてしまうのが良いように思います。Windowsの折り返して読めない部分が生じるのはダメです。

6. Inside / outside strokes get silently expanded when you create a pattern with them

   Try these steps:
   1. Create a shape (like ellipse or rectangle)
   2. Make sure you have Inside or Outside option chosen for Align Stroke in the Stroke panel
   3. Object > Pattern > Make (or drag the ellipse to the Swatches panel)
   4. Check the contents of the pattern.
   The stroke gets expanded!

   However, if you copy an object with an Inside / Outside stroke and paste it into the pattern — it doesn’t get expanded and stays live... until you commit editing — only then Ai warns you non-cnetered strokes will get expanded.

   Perhaps Ai should drop a message before expanding strokes? Shy one (the same as 'Shape expanded' we see when a rectangle gets modified to something else), or a loud one?

   Try these steps:

7. Swatches panel does not remember the size of chips when toggling List / Thumbnails view

   When I choose to display Large Thumbnail View in Swatches panel’s flyout menu, I expect Ai to respect my size choice and remember it, when I use the two buttons in the panel itself to switch List / Thumbnails modes.

   Instead, Illustrator forces it to Small (which can be OK, since I never chose the List to be large) and does not even remember my previous choice when I switch back (which is totally not OK).

   Love and honor user data. This is what we use the app for — to create data. This includes not only the actual artwork, but presets and UI settings.

8. Layers’ colors get messed up when moving objects in and out of sublayers

   When moving an artwork onto another layer the indicator-color changes as expected. If the new layer however is nested in another layer, and the artwork is moved from the nested layer onto the parent layer, the indicator color remains the nested layers color.
   This can be fixed, by closing and opening the childview of the parent layer.
   Also this does not apply, if the artwork is moved directly onto the layer and not between existing artworks on that layer.

   01 - Artwork is moved onto a new layer
   02 - New layer is nested in an parent layer
   03 - artwork is moved from the nested layer onto its parent, but between existing artworks
   04- New layer is deleted, but indicator-color remains

9. Slanted instances are not properly sorted

   When a variable font has ***** axis and right leaning instances (common oblique styles) the Oblique instances gets sorted before the Romans on the font menu dropdown. See attachment.

   According to the OT spec, right leaning instances must use negative values, so I‘m guessing Adobe’s font menu is sorting instances by slnt coordinates in ascending direction when it should be in the other direction.

   This is not only bad and uncommon for users but is also pushing font developers to make fonts against the spec just to circunvent this situation. Plase fix.

   Note. All the fonts tested have proper STAT tables and axes ordering is correct.

10. Bullets are forced when pasting a text

    Please take a look at the GIF.
    I paste a text (using Paste without formatting) into a mixed selection, made with Select All command. The text has both bulleted and non-bulleted paragraphs.
    I expect it to NOT have bullets enabled, since the first paragraph in the selection does not have it.
    Instead, Illustrator forces bullets for the whole pasted text.

11. Editing a repeat object unhides unrelated objects

    When editing a repeat object in isolation mode then after exiting the isolation mode, other (unrelated) objects that were formerly hidden, get unhidden.

12. Stroke Inside is unchangeable on a compound shape

    If you make a compound shape from two paths with strokes set to Inside, then this is retained for the compound shape and shown in the Appearance panel, but it's not reflected in the Stroke panel and it can't be changed there.

13. Variable Font Changes

    While working with a Variable Font in Adobe Illustrator 27.2, everything works fine, and I save and close the file I am working on. The next time I open the file in Illustrator, the Variable Font changes to an italic version. There is no easy fix to revert the text other than to select and adjust it.

14. Repeat object has no indication of selection when bounding box is off

    Repeats is broken right from the start and you are not even planning to improve it... OK, not improve it, but just to make stable, as it was supposed to be.

    Here in the GIF, I have Bounding Box turned on, and it seems it works OK.

    Then I disable bounding box (which is normal for me and a lot of other users). Again — AI allows to turn if OFF, and everything works without it just FINE — except for Repeats and area type text (but this is another tale).

    Now, when I select both objects, the repeat object looks like it’s not selected at all, but it is — I move them and both get moved.

    Even funnier it becomes when I try to select only the Repeat object — I see controls, I can change them... but I can’t move the object. More of it — I can’t deselect it by clicking the canvas or another object! Only with the Deselect All command.

    WTF?!

15. Scripts ran via actions do not select properly

    Dear developers,

    A few days ago I wrote a simple script which uses pathfinder to unite paths. This works perfectly when the script is ran via File > Scripts. But when added to an action and ran the script seems unable to select the proper layer and thus fails to run pathfinder.

16. Cannot exit presentation mode.

    Esc key is not working in presentation mode so I cannot exit from the presentation mode at all. I have to force quit the app every time.

    ご報告いただいた内容を検証した結果、以下の現象を確認いたしました。

    • 環境設定の「プレビュー境界を使用」が有効の場合、特定の効果が適用されているポイントテキストオブジェクトを変形パネルの幅（高さ）サイズフィールドで縦横比固定でリサイズすると、文字が正しくリサイズされない。
    • 文字パネルのフォントサイズでリサイズする場合は、正しく演算される。
    • 環境設定の「プレビュー境界を使用」が無効の場合は、特に問題は発生しない。

    これは、以前のバージョンでも同じ現象が確認できました。

    修正などの開発の進捗がありましたら、こちらで報告いたします。

18. 行頭禁則文字に関わる和欧文間隔をカスタマイズ可能に！

    Illustratorの日本語組版で、たとえばプリセットの文字組アキ量設定「行末約物半角」を元に、和欧文間隔を「0%」にカスタマイズしても、そのカスタマイズの結果は、何故か「行頭禁則文字」に分類される文字種には効果がありません。
    ※添付ファイルをご参照くださいませ（macOS Catalina上のCC2021にて作成）。

    日本語組版の中では、デフォルトの「25%」アキを「12.5%」あるいは「0%」としたいという作業は少なからず発生しますが、上記のような挙動では、作業者の負担になるばかりです。

    可能であれば、「文字組アキ量設定和欧文間隔のカスタマイズが、行頭禁則文字にも効くように」改善することを希望します。
    挙動を変更していただければ、作業者の負担も軽減され、喜んで受け入れられるに違いありません。

    なお、このような挙動の変更は、「文字組みアキ量設定に頼らずなんらかの方法で和欧文間隔を変更した既存ファイル」にはあまり影響がないものと考えますが、変更していただくならば、【その変更を周知】していただくことは大切なことだと申し添えておきます。

19. The colors in the closed file are persistently and almost forcibly trying to enter the palette.

    Let's say a spot color was used in a previous work and somehow copied. Later, when the file job is finished and I start another new job even though I have closed it, the copied color in the closed file persistently and almost forcibly tries to enter the palette. I tried to describe it simply in the video.

20. Strange symbol ('envelope' sign) appears at the end of pasted text

    Why does the envelope sign appear when I copy text from somewhere else (like HEX color code copied or translation result text form Google Translate) and paste it into Illustrator?

    Happens only on Windows it seems.
